Pinopolis Historic District South
Pinopolis Historic District South is a national historic district located at Pinopolis, Berkeley County, South Carolina. It encompasses 12 contributing buildings and consists of the historic core of the planters retreat community of Pinopolis. The district contains numerous early to middle-19th century summer houses, the Gothic Revival influenced Pinopolis Methodist Church (c. 1900), and other later 19th century buildings including some in the Queen Anne style. The buildings of the Pinopolis Historic District South are representative of the development of vernacular building forms and construction technology of the 19th century. The absence of stylistic pretensions in most of the buildings is typical of pineland village architecture. Pinopolis, South Carolina
Pinopolis is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Berkeley County, South Carolina, United States. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 948. Demographics History Founded circa 1845, the community was established at a relatively high elevation in the "low country" of South Carolina, and it gave an escape from mosquitoes and uncomfortable heat. It became a gathering place for those of means during this time. It shared this aspect with other communities throughout the plantation economy of this era. A resident spontaneously coined the name "Pinopolis" because of the many pine trees. This is probably a reflection of schooling that included references to Greek and Latin. During the pre-Civil War period it developed in this way and maintained as a place of polish and refinement. Berkeley County, South Carolina
Berkeley County is a county in the U.S. state of South Carolina. As of the 2020 census, its population was 229,861. Its county seat is Moncks Corner. After two previous incarnations of Berkeley County, the current county was created in 1882. Berkeley County is included in the Charleston-North Charleston, SC Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Berkeley County was established in 1682. It was named after John and William Berkeley, co-owners of the Province of Carolina. It became part of the Charleston District in 1769. It did not exist as a District during most of the 19th century and generally was part of the Low Country culture. In 1882, after Democrats regained control of the state legislature following the Reconstruction era, they established the current incarnation of Berkeley County, with its seat at Mount Pleasant. Gothic Revival (also referred to as Victorian Gothic, neo-Gothic, or Gothick) is an architectural movement that began in the late 1740s in England. The movement gained momentum and expanded in the first half of the 19th century, as increasingly serious and learned admirers of the neo-Gothic styles sought to revive medieval Gothic architecture, intending to complement or even supersede the neoclassical styles prevalent at the time.
