Pinky Mitchell
Pinky Mitchell was an American boxer who became the first champion in the light welterweight division by receiving the most votes by ballot on November 15, 1922. He held the title until 1926. In his impressive career he fought Oakland Jimmy Duffy, and champions Rocky Kansas, James Red Herring, Benny Leonard, Lew Tendler, Jack Britton, Mushy Callahan and Joe Dundee. Early life Born Myron Mitchell on January 1, 1899, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Mitchell was nicknamed Pinky because of his father's statement, on seeing Mitchell in his crib as a baby, that "he's like a little pink rascal." Georgie Levine
Georgie Levine (April 12, 1901 – December 25, 1993) was a Jewish, New York based, top-rated welterweight boxer in the 1920s. He was trained for much of his career by Izzy Sarber. Early life and career Levine was born in Russia on April 12, 1901, but grew up with his family on New York's East side near Brooklyn. According to Levine, he first began boxing around sixteen. In a win that spotlighted his rise as a recognized world welterweight contender, Levine defeated Tommy Milligan on March 3, 1926 in twelve rounds at Brooklyn's Broadway Arena on March 3, 1926. Levine led throughout the battle, punishing his Irish opponent in the late rounds with short jabs from his right. Milligan was forced to take a defensive posture and was unable to land a telling blow in the match. Light welterweight, also known as junior welterweight or super lightweight, is a weight class in combat sports. Boxing Professional boxing In professional boxing, light welterweight is contested between the lightweight and welterweight divisions, in which boxers weigh above 61.2kg or 135 pounds and up to 63.5 kg or 140 pounds. The first champion of this weight class was Pinky Mitchell in 1946, though he was only awarded his championship by a vote of the readers of the ''Boxing Blade'' magazine. Willie Harmon
Willie Harmon, (born April 20, 1899), was an American boxer in the welterweight division. Harmon was a top welterweight contender for a number of years in the mid-1920s. He was ranked as the #6 welterweight in the world for 1925 by '' The Ring'' magazine. Early life and career Harmon was born on April 20, 1899, to Jewish parents in New York's Lower East Side. He defeated Pinky Mitchell, former Junior Welterweight world champion, on August 14, 1925, in a ten round points decision in Milwaukee. A few publications listed the bout as a draw. The event was made memorable by Mitchell returning his purse, claiming he fought too poorly to have earned it. Nate Goldman, fellow Jewish boxer, became a second round knockout victim at Madison Square Garden on New Year's day 1926.
