Pinewood Depot
Pinewood Depot is an historic railway station located at the junction of East Avenue and Clarke Street in the town of Pinewood, at the southern entrance of the High Hills of Santee, South Carolina. It is the only railroad station left in Sumter County, but is not longer used by CSX, the current owner of the railroad right-of-way. On June 10, 1997, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. History In 1888 the Manchester and Augusta Railroad began construction of the Pinewood Depot on its Sumter to Denmark line. By the time it was finished in 1889, the railroad had become part of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. The town, originally known as Clarendon, after the name of the county it was then in, grew up around the station. Pinewood is a town located on South Carolina Highway 261 at the southern entrance to the High Hills of Santee in Sumter County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 538 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Sumter, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. Atlantic Coast Line Railroad
The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad was a United States Class I railroad formed in 1900, though predecessor railroads had used the ACL brand since 1871. In 1967 it merged with long-time rival Seaboard Air Line Railroad to form the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. Much of the original ACL network has been part of CSX Transportation since 1986. The Atlantic Coast Line served the Southeast, with a concentration of lines in Florida. Numerous named passenger trains were operated by the railroad for Florida-bound tourists, with the Atlantic Coast Line contributing significantly to Florida's economic development in the first half of the 20th century. Seaboard Coast Line Railroad
The Seaboard Coast Line Railroad was a Class I railroad company operating in the Southeastern United States beginning in 1967. Its passenger operations were taken over by Amtrak in 1971. Manchester And Augusta Railroad
The Manchester and Augusta Railroad (also M&A, M&A Railroad Co., Manchester & Augusta RR, and Manchester & Augusta Railroad Company) was a Southeastern railroad that operated following the American Civil War. The Manchester and Augusta Railroad was chartered in the 1870s, and built a line from Sumter, South Carolina, southwest to Denmark, South Carolina.
