It is located on a small strip of land between the Cumberland River and Pine Mountain. History Pineville is one of the oldest settlements in Kentucky, located at the crossing of the Cumberland River by the Wilderness Road. History Pineville was originally named Maryville, and under the latter name was laid out in 1847. The name was changed to Pineville in 1849 since another community already had the name of Maryville. History Pineville became known as a mule trading center during the time of the Charlotte 'gold rush'. At that time 'Pineville' was called 'Morrow's Turnout'.
