Pine Point, South Australia
Pine Point (formerly Muloowurtie) is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia on the east side of Yorke Peninsula adjacent to Gulf St Vincent. It was surveyed as a government town in 1883 and proclaimed under the name of Muloowurtie on 24 January 1884. The name was changed to Pine Point in 1940. The boundaries of the locality were created in May 1999 in respect to the "long established name" and includes both "the Pine Point Shack Site" and " the Government Town of Pine Point." Ardrossan
Ardrossan (; ) is a town on the North Ayrshire coast in southwestern Scotland. The town has a population of 10,670 and forms part of a conurbation with Saltcoats and Stevenston known as the 'Three Towns'. Ardrossan is located on the east shore of the Firth of Clyde. History Ardrossan's roots can be traced to the construction of its castle 'Cannon Hill', thought to be in around 1140, by Simon de Morville. The castle and estate passed to the Barclay family (also known as Craig) and through successive heirs until the 14th century when it passed to the Eglinton family on the death of Godfrey Barclay de Ardrossan, who died without an heir. Pine Point, Northwest Territories
Pine Point is an abandoned locality that formerly held town status near the south shore of Great Slave Lake between the towns of Hay River and Fort Resolution in the Northwest Territories of Canada. It was built to serve the work force at the Pine Point Mine, an open-pit mine that produced lead and zinc ores. The town's population peaked at 1,915 in 1976, but was abandoned and deconstructed in 1988 after the mine closed in 1987. History Construction of both the Pine Point mine and the community commenced in 1962. Pine Point incorporated as a town on April 1, 1974. The mine was closed in 1987, forcing the single-industry town to close in 1988. Mike Lenton was the town's last mayor. Pine Point houses were sold cheaply, and many of the buildings were then moved to Fort Resolution (including the ice arena), Hay River and northern Alberta while the remaining buildings were demolished. Pine Point Mine
The Pine Point Mine is located on the south shore of Great Slave Lake between Hay River to the west and Fort Resolution to the east, in the Northwest Territories of Canada. It produced lead and zinc ores from a Mississippi Valley Type deposit between 1964 and 1988. Most of the mining was done by open-pit methods. The town of Pine Point was built by the mining company, Cominco, and when the mine closed the town was abandoned and demolished. History The Pine Point ore deposit was discovered in the late 19th century by fur traders at Fort Resolution who learned of the lead ores from the natives. A minor staking rush occurred in 1898 when Klondike prospectors heard rumours of silver at the location. There was no silver to be found, and although the lead ore was very rich, it was not feasible to mine the isolated deposit without good transportation to the south. Pine Point Research Natural Area is a natural area that is protected by the United States Department of Agriculture, specifically through the branch of the Forest Service. It was established in 1932 and consists of of land. It is located in Cass County, Minnesota and is part of the Chippewa National Forest. The natural area is bounded on the north, east, and west sides by Lake Leech. To the south is Onigum, an unincorporated community that had been an Indian agency. Ecology Pine Point is a forested area that consists mostly of jack pine and red pine, as well as areas of meadow. It also contains a lake and of marshland. Pine Point is a cape landform in Richardson Bay, Marin County, California near the town of Sausalito. There was an early 1900 rail line in operation in the vicinity of Pine Point. Pine Point was an area of early twentieth century residential land use, prior to the construction of Liberty ships in the local area. "Sacrificed in this country’s great wartime mobilization following December 7, 1941, this small peninsula jutting out from the shoreline, once a snug residential enclave, provided the vital landfill required to create Marinship. Richardson Bay (originally Richardson's Bay) is a shallow, ecologically rich arm of San Francisco Bay, managed under a Joint Powers Agency of four northern California cities. The Richardson Bay Sanctuary was acquired in the early 1960s by the National Audubon Society. The bay was named for William A. Richardson, early 19th century sea captain and builder in San Francisco. It contains both Strawberry Spit and Aramburu Island. In spite of its urbanized periphery, Richardson Bay supports extensive eelgrass areas and sizable undisturbed intertidal habitats. It is a feeding and resting area for a panoply of estuarine and pelagic birds, while its associated marshes and littoral zones support a variety of animal and plant life.
