Pine Hill (Ashwood, Tennessee)
Pine Hill is a historic mansion in Ashwood, Tennessee, U.S.. It was built in 1839 for Samuel Henry Armstrong, a wheat, corn and tobacco farmer. With It was purchased by the Dixon family in 1869. The house was designed in the Federal architectural style, with a Greek Revival portico. Ashwood is an unincorporated community in Maury County, Tennessee, in the United States. Most of the community has been annexed by the city of Mount Pleasant. Location It is located six miles southwest of Columbia, Tennessee. History Ashwood Hall, Bishop Leonidas Polk's plantation house, was built in the community in 1833–1837. Another mansion, Pine Hill, was built here in 1838. Federal Architecture
Federal-style architecture is the name for the classicizing architecture built in the newly founded United States between 1780 and 1830, and particularly from 1785 to 1815, which was heavily based on the works of Andrea Palladio with several innovations on Palladian architecture by Thomas Jefferson and his contemporaries first for Jefferson's Monticello estate and followed by many examples in government building throughout the United States. Greek Revival Architecture
The Greek Revival was an architectural movement which began in the middle of the 18th century but which particularly flourished in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, predominantly in northern Europe and the United States and Canada, but also in Greece itself following independence in 1832. It revived many aspects of the forms and styles of ancient Greek architecture, in particular the Greek temple, with varying degrees of thoroughness and consistency.
