Fifth Generation Computer
The Fifth Generation Computer Systems (FGCS) was a 10-year initiative begun in 1982 by Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) to create computers using massively parallel computing and logic programming. It aimed to create an "epoch-making computer" with supercomputer-like performance and to provide a platform for future developments in artificial intelligence. FGCS was ahead of its time and a commercial failure. FGCS contributed greatly to the field of concurrent logic programming. The term "fifth generation" was intended to convey the system as being advanced. Jonathan Pim (1806–1885)
Jonathan Pim (1806 – 6 July 1885) was an Irish Liberal Party politician. He was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Dublin City at the 1865 general election, and held the seat until the 1874 general election, when his absence abroad when the election was called unexpectedly made it impossible to mount an effective campaign. He was president of the Statistical and Social Inquiry Society of Ireland between 1875 and 1877. A Quaker, he served as secretary for the Quaker Relief fund during the Great Irish Famine: the work involved was so exhausting that he suffered a temporary collapse of health. Nonetheless, he retained a lifelong interest in efforts to alleviate the poverty-stricken condition of the Irish. Under his guidance, the family firm, Pim Brothers, opened a pioneering department store in South Great George's Street in Dublin city centre. The Prague Marathon (also known as Prague International Marathon (PIM) and Volkswagen Prague Marathon) is an annual road marathon held in the city of Prague in the Czech Republic each May. Pim Weight
Pim weights were polished stones about 15 mm (5/8 inch) diameter, equal to about two-thirds of a Hebrew shekel. Many specimens have been found since their initial discovery early in the 20th century, and each one weighs about 7.6 grams, compared to 11.5 grams of a shekel. Its name comes from the inscription seen across the top of its dome shape: the Phoenician letters 𐤐𐤉𐤌 (Hebrew , transliterated pym). Impact Prior to the discovery of the weights by archaeologists, scholars did not know how to translate the word (''pîm'') in 1 Samuel 13:21. The Pim Fortuyn List ( nl, Lijst Pim Fortuyn, LPF) was a political party in the Netherlands named after its eponymous founder Pim Fortuyn, a former university professor and political columnist. A penalty in ice hockey is a punishment for an infringement of the rules. Most penalties are enforced by sending the offending player to a penalty box for a set number of minutes. During the penalty the player may not participate in play. Penalties are called and enforced by the referee, or in some cases, the linesman. The offending team may not replace the player on the ice (although there are some exceptions, such as fighting), leaving them short-handed as opposed to full strength. When the opposing team is said to be on a ''power play'', they will have one more player on the ice than the short-handed team. The short-handed team is said to be "on the penalty kill" until the penalty expires and the penalized player returns to play. While standards vary somewhat between leagues, most leagues recognize several common varieties of penalties, as well as common infractions. ''Pacific Islands Monthly'', commonly referred to as "PIM", was a magazine founded in 1930 in Sydney by New Zealand born journalist R.W. Robson. Background ''Pacific Islands Monthly'' was started in Sydney in 1930. The first issue ran in August 1930. It consisted of 12 pages and was in the format of a newspaper. The following year it was presented in magazine format. Its founder Robert William Robson, who was originally from New Zealand, moved to Sydney, Australia during World War I. Pondok Indah Mall (Indonesian: Mal Pondok Indah) or PIM is a large shopping complex located in the Pondok Indah suburb of South Jakarta, Indonesia. The Pondok Indah Mall complex (referred to by Jakartans as "PIM") comprises three large buildings, the older 3-storey PIM1 and the 5-storey PIM2, and the newest building PIM3. PIM 1 and PIM2 are interconnected via two elevated multi-storey pedestrian walkways (Skywalk North and Skywalk South), which also tenanted by specialty shops. PIM3, which was officially opened on April 8, 2021, is connected to the other two buildings by an underpass. Pim Island (previously Bedford Pim Island) is located off the eastern coast of Ellesmere Island, part of the Qikiqtaaluk Region of the Canadian territory of Nunavut. Located within the Arctic Archipelago, it is a part of the Queen Elizabeth Islands. Pim Island is separated from Ellesmere Island by Rice Strait, the waterway that connects Rosse Bay to the south and Buchanan Bay to the north. Nares Strait is to the east. Pimhill is a geographically large civil parish in Shropshire, England, to the north of Shrewsbury. It is named after a hill, which rises to 163m, sometimes spelt Pim Hill. In recent times the parish is more well known as "Bomere Heath and District". As well as the large village of Bomere Heath, the small villages of Albrighton, Atcham, Fitz, Leaton, Merrington and Preston Gubbals, as well as the hamlets of Crossgreen, Dunnsheath, Forton Heath, Grafton, Mytton, Old Woods and Walford Heath, lie in the parish. The 2001 census recorded 2008 people living in the parish, in 853 households, the population increasing to 2,118 at the 2011 Census. Near Pim Hill is Lea Hall, a notable Elizabethan brick house and dovecote.
