Pilchuck Glass School
Pilchuck Glass School is an international center for glass art education. The school was founded in 1971 by Dale Chihuly, Anne Gould Hauberg (1917-2016), and John H Hauberg (1916-2002). The campus is located on a former tree farm in Stanwood, Washington in the United States. The administrative offices are located in Seattle. The name " Pilchuck" comes from the local Native American language and translates to "red water" in reference to the Pilchuck River. Pilchuck offers one, two, or three week resident classes each summer in a broad spectrum of glass techniques as well as residencies for emerging and established artists working in all media. Dale Chihuly
Dale Chihuly () (born September 20, 1941) is an American glass artist and entrepreneur. He is best known in the field of blown glass, "moving it into the realm of large-scale sculpture". Early life Dale Patrick Chihuly was born on September 20, 1941, in Tacoma, Washington. His parents were George and Viola Chihuly; his paternal grandfather was born in Slovakia. In 1956, his older brother and only sibling George died in a Navy aviation training accident in Pensacola, Florida. Two years later in 1958, Chihuly's father died of a heart attack at the age of 51. Chihuly had no interest in continuing his formal education after graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1959. However, at his mother's urging, he enrolled at the College of Puget Sound. Ann Gardner
Ann Gardner (born 1947) is an American glass artist known for her large-scale sculptural and architectural installations. She was born in Eugene, Oregon. Career Gardner began her career studying at the University of Oregon. In 1974, she received a degree in Ceramics and Fine Arts from Portland State University. As a developing artist, she incorporated painting, ceramics, and drawing into her work. Gardener moved to Seattle in 1979 where she continues to work. Gardner's early training and work used hand-painted ceramics. In 1985, Dale Chihuly invited her to be an artist-in-residence at the Pilchuck Glass School where she adapted her ceramics experience to working with glass. Glass production involves two main methods – the float glass process that produces sheet glass, and glassblowing that produces bottles and other containers. It has been done in a variety of ways during the history of glass. Reji Thomas
Rejina (Reji) Thomas is an American glass artist who has thrived as a painter and artistic community advocate. In 1995 Thomas reproduced the intricate glass work for the restoration of the Texas Capitol building. She was commissioned by the State of Texas to create gifts for the President of Mexico and Elizabeth II, Queen Elizabeth of England. Debora Moore
Debora Moore (born 1960, St. Louis, Missouri) is a contemporary glass artist. She is best known for her glass orchids. Biography Moore was born into a military family in St. Louis, Missouri. She was the third of six children, and spent many summers with her grandparents while she was growing up. Her career as an artist was influenced by her grandparents' garden and public art classes she took while visiting them. Before becoming a glass artist, she worked a number of jobs, including waiting tables and modeling. She is married to glass artist Benjamin Moore. She owns Fiori Studio, located in Seattle, WA. David Patchen
David Scott Patchen is an American glass artist who uses the techniques of cane and murrine in an American style. (Cane are colored and patterned glass rods, murrine are patterned cross-sections of glass 'tiles'.) Patchen's work is known primarily for a combination of complexity and scale in densely patterned glass. Therman Statom
Therman Statom is an American Studio Glass artist whose primary medium is sheet glass. He cuts, paints, and assembles the glass - adding found glass objects along the way – to create three-dimensional sculptures. Many of these works are large in scale. Statom is known for his site-specific installations in which his glass structures dwarf the visitor. Sound and projected digital imagery are also features of the environmental works. Olga Volchkova
Olga Volchkova ( Russian: Ольга Волчкова; born 1970) is a Russian-born artist currently resident in Eugene, Oregon. Biography Volchkova was born in Tver, Russia, in 1970, in the former Soviet Union. Many of her relatives were collectivized subsistence farmers living in villages outside of the city, and across the seasons she would leave the city to farm, garden, and forage for berries and mushrooms with them. She developed a sympathy with nature that would influence her later art. As a child she went to math school, and studied piano for eight years in music school. Cynthia Lahti (born 1963) is an American contemporary artist from Portland, Oregon, who works in many mediums: "from collage to ceramics, altered books, and painting". Jeff Ballard (artist)
Jeff Ballard (born Chicago, 1977) is an American glass artist. Biography Jeff Ballard started working with glass at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in the fall of 1996. After receiving his BFA in 2000 Ballard spent six years gaffing and designing work for production studios across the Southwest. He has taken classes and worked at Pilchuck Glass School, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and the Pittsburgh Glass Center, studying under notable artists such as Dante Marioni, Chris Taylor, Davide Salvadore, and Pino Signoretto. Alena Matejka
Alena Matejka (also Alena Matějková; born 26 January 1966) is a Czech sculptor and glass designer. She also works with other materials, often in combination. Education Matejka was born in Jindřichův Hradec; she studied at the Secondary School of Glassmaking in Kamenický Šenov from 1981 until 1985.
