Pilbara newspapers is a selection of newspapers published in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The rise and fall of some of the newspapers reflect the shifts and changes in population in various localities of the region as mining starts and moves through different zones, and also as some mining operations are exhausted or closed. Pilbara
The Pilbara () is a large, dry, thinly populated region in the north of Western Australia. It is known for its Aboriginal peoples; its ancient landscapes; the red earth; and its vast mineral deposits, in particular iron ore. It is also a global biodiversity hotspot for subterranean fauna. Gascoyne Newspapers
Newspapers published or distributed in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia have been spread over a large distance, and in varying degrees of success. The region has a low population density, and some communities, apart from Carnarvon, would not be sufficient to support long term newspaper production. In most cases, newspaper located in Perth and Geraldton would have summary news about the Gascoyne to supplement any local publications news. Pilbara newspapers have overlapped the Gascoyne region, but in most cases they are separate. History Of Western Australia
The human history of Western Australia commenced between 40,000 and 60,000 years ago with the arrival of Aboriginal Australians on the northwest coast. The first inhabitants expanded across the east and south of the continent. The first recorded European contact was in 1616, when Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog landed on the west coast, having been blown off course while en route to Batavia, nowadays called Jakarta. Although many expeditions visited the coast during the next 200 years, there was no lasting attempt at establishment of a permanent settlement until December 1826 when an expedition on behalf of the New South Wales colonial government, led by Major Edmund Lockyer, landed at King George Sound, and became the port city of Albany. Kimberley Newspapers
A modest number of newspapers have been produced in, or for, the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Few are still being published today. Some of the newspapers reflect the economic interests of the region, but not to the same extent that is seen in Pilbara newspapers. There is some cross-over between newspapers distributed in both the Kimberley and the Pilbara. The Kimberley region has the second lowest population in Western Australia, accounting for approximately 6% of the state's population. However, from 2009 to 2013 the Kimberley experienced above average population growth at 2.7%. The low population numbers are reflected in the small number of Kimberley newspapers. Goldfields-Esperance Newspapers
This is a list of newspapers published in, or for, the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. Newspapers published in the goldfields, and the people involved, in the late 1890s and early 1900s during the expansive stage of the goldfields, were of considerable political impact on Western Australian politics. The seeking of adequate representation of goldfields interests over the coast in the Perth based parliament was a constant issues over the early decades of the newspapers. Goldfields-Esperance is the biggest region in Western Australia. Its population is just under 60,000. The regions involvement in the mining industry is reflected in a number of its newspapers.
