Pietro Baracchi
Pietro Paolo Giovanni Ernesto Baracchi (25 February 1851 – 23 July 1926) was an Italy, Italian-born astronomer, active in Australia and Government Astronomer of Victoria (Australia) 1900-15.J. L. In 1876 he sailed for New Zealand, but soon moved on to Australia. He gained work as an assistant at the Melbourne Observatory and was selected to be transferred to Darwin, Northern Territory, Darwin. After completing his task there to measure longitudes, he returned to Melbourne and became an acting government astronomer on 30 June 1895 on Robert L. J. Ellery's retirement. The Royal Society of Victoria (RSV) is the oldest scientific society in the state of Victoria in Australia. The Melbourne Club is a private social club established in 1838 and located at 36 Collins Street, Melbourne. The club is a symbol of Australia's British social heritage and was established at a gathering of 23 gentlemen on Saturday, 17 December 1838, and initially used John Pascoe Fawkner's hotel on the corner of Collins Street and Market Street. The Melbourne Club moved to new purpose-built premises at the eastern end of Collins Street, designed by Leonard Terry in Renaissance Revival style, in 1859. A dining room wing with a bay window was added at the western end in 1885, designed by Terry and Oakden. Mount Stromlo Observatory
Mount Stromlo Observatory located just outside Canberra, Australia, is part of the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Australian National University (ANU). History The observatory was established in 1924 as The Commonwealth Solar Observatory. The Mount Stromlo site had already been used for observations in the previous decade, a small observatory being established there by Pietro Baracchi using the Oddie telescope located there in 1911. The dome built to house the Oddie telescope was the first Commonwealth building constructed in the newly established Australian Capital Territory.
