Pietermaritzburg Ring Road
The Pietermaritzburg Ring Road, also known as The Pietermaritzburg Bypass is a halfway ring road that circles the city of Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. It is part of the N3 National Route. Route The Half Ring Road is fully formed by the N3 freeway. The 9 km half ring road follows east around Pietermaritzburg (bypassing the city centre). It starts at the R103 split in the northern suburb of Athlone and ends at the R56 merge in the southern suburb of Scottsville. Pietermaritzburg (; Zulu: umGungundlovu) is the capital and second-largest city in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It was founded in 1838 and is currently governed by the Msunduzi Local Municipality. Its Zulu name umGungundlovu is the name used for the district municipality. The R103 is a Regional Route in South Africa that is the designation for some of the old sections of roads that were previously the N3, prior to upgrading. It only has 3 sections, from Hillcrest to Ladysmith, from Warden to Villiers and from Heidelberg to Johannesburg. Route Kwazulu-Natal Its first section begins as a junction with the M13 Highway in Hillcrest, a town 30 km north-west of Durban. The R103 begins as the Old Main Road and leaves Hillcrest in a roughly north-west direction and enters Cato Ridge from the east. In Cato Ridge, the road crosses the N3 at the 53 exit and then follows the south side of the N3, leaving the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality, before recrossing the N3 freeway at Camperdown. The R56 is a provincial route in South Africa that connects Middelburg with Pietermaritzburg via Molteno, Maclear and Kokstad. It is co-signed with the N2 between Kokstad and Stafford's Post for 39 kilometres. The R56 is known for being part of the shortest route between Cape Town in the Western Cape and Durban in KwaZulu-Natal.
