Piers Edgecumbe
Piers Edgecumbe ( 1609 – 6 January 1667) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons between 1640 and 1644 and between 1662 and 1667. He supported the Royalist side in the English Civil War. Edgecumbe was the son of Sir Richard Edgecumbe and his wife Mary Cottle, daughter of Sir Thomas Cottle of London. In 1628 Edgecumbe was elected Member of Parliament for Newport until 1629 when King Charles I decided to rule without parliament. In April 1640, Edgecumbe was elected MP for Camelford in the Short Parliament and was returned again for the Long Parliament until he was disabled in January 1644. After the Restoration, Edgecumbe was appointed High Sheriff of Cornwall in 1660 and re-elected MP for Newport in 1662, holding the seat until his death in 1667. Edgecumbe died at the age of 51 and the inscription on his monument stated he "was a master of languages and sciences; a lover of the King and Church which he endeavoured to support, in the time of the Civil Wars, ... The House of Commons of England was the lower house of the Parliament of England (which incorporated Wales) from its development in the 14th century to the union of England and Scotland in 1707, when it was replaced by the House of Commons of Great Britain after the 1707 Act of Union was passed in both the English and Scottish parliaments at the time. In 1801, with the union of Great Britain and Republic of Ireland, Ireland, that house was in turn replaced by the House of Commons of the United Kingdom. Origins The Parliament of England developed from the Magnum Concilium that advised the English monarch in medieval times. Nicholas Trefusis (died c. 1648) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons of England variously between 1628 and 1648. Origins Nicholas Trefusis was the last of the line of a branch of the Trefusis family living at Lezant in Cornwall. The Trefusis family originated at the manor of Trefusis in the parish of Mylor, near Falmouth, in Cornwall. The present representative of the Trefusis family is Baron Clinton, of Heanton Satchville, Huish, Devon, the largest private landowner in Devon. Career Trefusis was elected as Member of Parliament for Newport in Cornwall in 1628 and held the seat until 1629 when King Charles I decided to rule without parliament. Sir Francis Drake, 2nd Baronet (25 September 1617 – 6 January 1662) of Buckland Abbey, Devon was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons variously between 1646 and 1662. He was a Colonel of the Horse, fighting in the Parliamentary army during the English Civil War. Drake was the son of Sir Francis Drake, 1st Baronet of Buckland Abbey and his second wife Joan Stroud, daughter of Sir William Stroud of Newnham. He was a great- nephew of Vice Admiral, Sir Francis Drake. He succeeded to the baronetcy on the death of his father on 11 March 1637. He was appointed Sheriff of Devon for 1645. In 1646, Drake was elected Member of Parliament for Bere Alston in the Long Parliament but following Pride's Purge in 1648, he and other Devon MPs took no part in the proceedings of the subsequent Rump Parliament. Gregory Clement (1594–1660) was an Kingdom of England, English Member of Parliament (MP) and one of the regicides of King Charles I of England, Charles I. Biography Clement was baptised at St Andrew's, Plymouth on 21 November 1594. His father, John Clement, was a merchant and mayor of Plymouth and his mother was Judith Sparke.
