Pierre Sémard
Pierre Semard (15 February 1887, Bragny-sur-Saône, Saône-et-Loire – 7 March 1942, Évreux, Eure) was a trade unionist, secretary general of the federation of railway-workers and leader of the French Communist Party (acting as its secretary general from 1924 to 1928). He was shot in prison by the Nazi occupiers in 1942, and is buried at the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. He was key figure in the French Section of the Workers' International (SFIO) and a trade unionist in the Confédération générale du travail unitaire (CGTU) and Confédération générale du travail (CGT). ''La Nouvelle Vie Ouvrière'' (''The New Worker's Life'') ou ''NVO'' is a French trade union magazine first published in 1909 under the name ''La Vie Ouvrière''. It is the main newspaper of the General Confederation of Labour. History 1909-1914 Alphonse Merrheim, a revolutionary syndicalist, arrived in Paris in 1904, and soon after met Pierre Monatte at the office of ''Pages Libres''. The two men would later work together to launch ''La Vie Ouvrière''. The first number appeared on 5 October 1909. The notice on the front page signed by Pierre Monatte proclaimed that it would be devoted to action, which would provide assistance to militants in the battle of propaganda. The paper was to be a practical instrument, without making any ideological concessions. 110 issues of the bi-monthly journal were published up to July 1914. Léon Blum
André Léon Blum (; 9 April 1872 – 30 March 1950) was a French socialist politician and three-time Prime Minister. As a Jew, he was heavily influenced by the Dreyfus affair of the late 19th century. He was a disciple of French Socialist leader Jean Jaurès and after Jaurès' assassination in 1914, became his successor. Despite his relatively short tenures, his time in office was very influential: as Prime Minister in the left-wing Popular Front government in 1936–37, he provided a series of major economic and social reforms. Blum declared neutrality in the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) to avoid the civil conflict spilling over into France itself. Once out of office in 1938, he denounced the appeasement of Germany.
