Pierre Hantaï
Pierre Hantaï (born 28 February 1964, Paris) is a French harpsichordist and conductor. Career The son of painter Simon Hantaï, he discovered the music of Johann Sebastian Bach when he was ten and first heard Gustav Leonhardt's recordings when he was eleven. He took up the harpsichord when he was eleven and was self-taught until meeting his first teacher, the American harpsichordist Arthur Haas. He later studied for two years in Amsterdam with Gustav Leonhardt. In 1983 he won the second prize in the Bruges harpsichord competition. His first recordings focused on the English virginalists ( Giles Farnaby and John Bull), and on Bach. Influential solo recordings include two Goldberg Variations, released ten years apart (1993, 2003), and an ongoing series of Domenico Scarlatti’s sonatas. The Toccatas for Keyboard, BWV 910–916, are seven pieces for clavier written by Johann Sebastian Bach. Although the pieces were not originally organized into a collection by Bach himself (as were most of his other keyboard works, such as the Well Tempered Clavier and the English Suites etc.), the pieces share many similarities, and are frequently grouped and performed together under a collective title.Schulenberg 2006, 97. Jérôme Hantaï
Jérôme Hantaï (born 1961) is a viola da gamba player and fortepianist. Biography Son of the painters Simon Hantaï and Zsuzsa Hantaï, Jérôme Hantaï grew up outside Paris. He was initially self-taught and played the recorder, harpsichord, fortepiano, and viola da gamba. He went on to study gamba with Wieland Kuijken at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where he received a Premier Prix in 1984. As a gamba and violone player, he has performed with numerous pioneers of the early music movement, including Sigiswald and Wieland Kuijken, René Jacobs, and Jean-Claude Malgoire. In France, he participated in the formation some of the first early music ensembles, such as the Orchestre Baroque d’Île-de-France and the Ensemble Orlando Gibbons. He is best known as a member of the Trio Hantaï, where he plays alongside his brothers Marc (traverso) and Pierre (harpsichord). The Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht ("Utrecht Early Music Festival") is an annual music festival that showcases and celebrates early European art music.
