Pierre Bourgault (artist)
Pierre Bourgault (born 1942) is an abstract sculptor living in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec where he was born. In 2022, he won the Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts. Early years and training Bourgault was born into a large family of wood sculptors. His father Jean-Julien Bourgault, and his two uncles Médard and André Bourgault founded the Saint-Jean-Port-Joli traditional school of wood sculpture in 1940. In 1966 he completed an internship at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze and then in 1967 founded a Sculpture School in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli and became its last director (1971-1986). In 1992, he co-founded Est-Nord-Est, an international artist residence. In 1996, he received a master's degree in visual arts from Laval University. Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec
Saint-Jean-Port-Joli is a village in the Regional County Municipality of L'Islet within the Chaudière-Appalaches region of Quebec, Canada. It is located on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River and is the county seat. The village is located off the Trans-Canada Highway, Autoroute 20. Route 132 passes through the town. It is known for its craftspeople and artists, especially in the fields of wood carving and sculpture. There are also several well-reputed restaurants. History The village takes its name from the seigneury of Port-Joly, which was established in 1677. The Parish of St-Jean-Port-Joli was canonically established in 1721. The church, on which construction began in 1779, has unique architecture and houses many sculptures. The Accademia di Belle Arti di Firenze ("academy of fine arts of Florence") is an instructional art academy in Florence, in Tuscany, in central Italy. It was founded by Cosimo I de' Medici in 1563, under the influence of Giorgio Vasari. Michelangelo, Benvenuto Cellini and other significant artists have been associated with it.
