Pierre ( ; lkt, Čhúŋkaške, lit=fort) is the capital city of South Dakota, United States, and the seat of Hughes County. The population was 14,091 at the 2020 census, making it the second-least populous US state capital after Montpelier, Vermont. It is South Dakota's ninth-most populous city. Founded in 1880, it was selected as the state capital when the territory was admitted as a state. Pierre is the principal city of the Pierre Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Hughes and Stanley counties. The rivière à Pierre (''English: River of Pierre'') is a tributary of the east bank of the Batiscan River, flowing in the unorganized territories of Lac-Blanc (township of Neilson) and Linton (township of Tonty), as well as in the municipality of Rivière-à-Pierre (township of Bois), in the Portneuf Regional County Municipality, in the administrative region of Capitale-Nationale, in the province of Quebec, in Canada. The course of the "rivière à Pierre" descends on the northeast side of the Batiscan River and on the northeast side of the St. Lawrence River. This river is part of the hydrographic side of the Batiscan River which generally winds south to the north bank of the St. Lawrence River. The Pierre River is a tributary of the Mitchinamecus River which is a tributary of the rivière du Lièvre, flowing in the unorganized territory of Baie-Obaoca, in the Matawinie Regional County Municipality, in the administrative region of Lanaudière, in the province of Quebec, in Canada. Huron University, also known as Si Tanka University at Huron, was a private university formerly located in Huron, South Dakota. Founded in 1883, it closed on April 1, 2005. History Founding What became Huron University was founded in 1883 as Presbyterian University of Southern Dakota, founded in Pierre, South Dakota, Pierre while it was still in Dakota Territory. A year later, the school became Pierre University, but was commonly known as Pierre College. On May 31, 1887, the university conferred its first degree, which was the first degree to be awarded in the Dakota Territory. In 1897, the efforts of John L. Pierre is a closed French cuisine restaurant which was situated on the 25th floor of the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Hong Kong. It opened in October 2006 after a major renovation to the hotel and was Pierre Gagnaire’s pied-à-terre in Hong Kong. Maurice Bernard Sendak (; June 10, 1928 – May 8, 2012) was an American author and illustrator of children's books. Pierre (February 16, 1983 – May 6, 2016) was an African penguin (''Spheniscus demersus'') who lived at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. He was the first penguin to have bald spots restored. Life Pierre hatched at the Maryland Zoo in Maryland in 1983 and was transferred in June to the Steinhart Aquarium facilities at the CAS. In 1997, the then-14-year-old Pierre began coughing periodically, due to an allergic reaction inflaming the upper respiratory tract, treated with one or two daily doses of hydroxyzine.
