Pierre-Nicolas Rolland
Pierre-Nicolas, baron Rolland (29 April 1761 at Dieppe – 9 November 1825), was a French admiral noted for his participation at the battles of Battle of Cape Finisterre (1805), Cape Finisterre in 1805 and Battle of the Basque Roads, the Basque Roads in 1809 during the Napoleonic Wars. Life Rolland joined the French Navy at a young age, participating in the American War of Independence, on board French frigate Sibylle (1777), ''Sibylle'' in 1778 in the squadron of Louis Guillouet d'Orvilliers, the French ship Amphion (1749), ''Amphion'' in 1779, in the squadron of Charles Henri d'Estaing, d'Estaing, the French frigate Amphitrite (1768), ''Amphitrite'' between 1779 and 1781, and the French ship Emeraude, ''Emeraude'' in 1782, in which he was wounded at the Battle of the Saintes. Dieppe
Dieppe (; Norman: ''Dgieppe'') is a coastal commune in the Seine-Maritime department in the Normandy region of northern France. Dieppe is a seaport on the English Channel at the mouth of the river Arques. A regular ferry service runs to Newhaven in England. Famous for its scallops, Dieppe also has a popular pebbled beach, a 15th-century castle and the churches of Saint-Jacques and Saint-Remi. French Ship Atlas (1801)
The ''Atlante'' was a 74-gun ship of the line of the Spanish Navy. She was acquired by France in 1801 and commissioned in the French Navy, being renamed to ''Atlas'' in 1803, serving in Santo Domingo and taking part in the Battle of Cape Finisterre (1805), Battle of Cape Finisterre. She was captured in Vigo at the outbreak of the Peninsular War. Career ''Atlante'' was built in Cartagena, Spain by expatriate English designer Edward Bryant, and launched in 1754. In August 1801, on the background of the War of the Second Coalition, Spain ceded her to her ally France. ''Atlante'' was brought into French service and commissioned in Cádiz on 23 September 1801. Théodore-Éloi Lebreton (1 December 1803 – 12 December 1883) was a 19th-century autodidact French poet, chansonnier and bibliographer. Biography Born from a day laborer and a washerwoman, Lebreton entered at age seven in an indienne factory in his hometown where he was taught the printing trade on fabrics. Barely able to spell, he learned, through perseverance, to read and write and, after a few years, he felt the desire to tell what he felt. Aged fourteen, he had succeeded, through saving his salary to complete his education by going to the theater, to be a great worker and educated in his workshop. French Ship Romulus (1812)
The ''Romulus'' was a Téméraire-class ship of the line, ''Téméraire'' class Seventy-four (ship), 74-gun ship of the line of the French Navy. In February 1814, under captain Rolland, she sailed from Toulon to Genoa, being part of a division under Julien Cosmao. On 13, she was engaged by three British ships of the line, notably HMS Boyne (1810), HMS ''Boyne'' and HMS Caledonia (1808), HMS ''Caledonia'', and managed to escape to Toulon by sailing close to the coast to avoid being surrounded. Battle Of Basque Roads
The Battle of the Basque Roads, also known as the Battle of Aix Roads (French: ''Bataille de l'île d'Aix'', also ''Affaire des brûlots'', rarely ''Bataille de la rade des Basques''), was a major naval battle of the Napoleonic Wars, fought in the narrow Basque Roads at the mouth of the Charente River on the Biscay coast of France. The battle, which lasted from 11–24 April 1809, was unusual in that it pitted a hastily-assembled squadron of small and unorthodox British Royal Navy warships against the main strength of the French Atlantic Fleet, the circumstances dictated by the cramped, shallow coastal waters in which the battle was fought.
