Pierre-Louis Panet
Pierre-Louis Panet (August 1, 1761 – December 2, 1812) was a Canadian lawyer, notary, seigneur, judge and political figure in Lower Canada. He was born in Montreal in 1761, the son of Pierre Panet, a lawyer. Panet qualified to practice as a lawyer in 1779 and as a notary in 1780. He practiced as a notary at Montreal from 1781 to 1783 and at Quebec City from 1783 to 1785. In 1781, he purchased the seigneury of Argenteuil. In 1783, he was named French language clerk for the Court of Common Pleas in Quebec district. In 1785, he was appointed clerk in the Prerogative Court. Panet was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada for Cornwallis in 1792 and was elected in Montreal East in 1800. In 1794, he was named clerk for the Court of King's Bench in Quebec District. He was named judge in the same court for Montreal district in 1795. Jean-Gabriel Cerré
Jean-Gabriel Cerré (August 12, 1734 – April 4, 1805) was a Quebec-born merchant in the Illinois Country and St. Louis. The son of Joseph Serré and Marie-Madeleine Picard, he was born in Montreal. Cerré established himself in Kaskaskia as a merchant in 1755 but retained business and personal connections with Montreal. He was pragmatic in his politics, supporting the British authorities while they were in control and transferring his loyalties to the Americans after George Rogers Clark seized control of the region. In 1779, he was named a justice of the peace for the district. However, the new government was not able to maintain order and, around the end of 1779, he moved to St. Louis, then under Spanish control. His business prospered and he became one of the wealthiest and most influential persons in the area. William Bent Berczy (January 6, 1791 – December 9, 1873) was a farmer, painter and political figure in Upper Canada. Life Early years He was born in London, England in 1791, the son of German immigrants William Berczy and Jeanne-Charlotte Allamand, and came to old York County in Upper Canada with his family in 1794. He grew up in York (now Toronto) (1794-1798, 1802-1804), Montreal (1798-1802, 1804-1812) and Quebec City (1804-1812) - wherever his father's development work required the family to relocate. Sainte-Mélanie, Quebec
Sainte-Mélanie is a municipality in the Lanaudière region of Quebec, Canada, part of the Joliette Regional County Municipality. It is located along the western shores of the L'Assomption River. History Sainte-Mélanie was formerly part of the territory of the Ailleboust Seignory, granted to Jean d'Ailleboust d'Argenteuil (1694-1785) in 1736. By 1800, Pierre-Louis Panet (1761-1812) was Lord of Ailleboust, whose daughter Charlotte-Mélanie Panet (1794-1872) may have been the source of the name Sainte-Mélanie, also a reference to Melania the Younger (383-439). Charlotte-Mélanie's husband, Marc-Antoine-Louis Lévesque (1782-1833), donated the land in 1814 for a chapel that was eventually built in 1830. Jean-Antoine Panet
Jean-Antoine Panet (June 8, 1751 – May 17, 1815) was a notary, lawyer, judge, seigneur and political figure in Lower Canada. He was born in Quebec in 1751, the son of Jean-Claude Panet. He served in the militia defending the town of Quebec during the American Revolution and he later attained the rank of Lieutenant-colonel in the militia. Panet entered practice as a notary in 1772, but also began to practice as a lawyer the following year. He became seigneur of Bourg-Louis in 1777. In 1779, he married Louise-Philippe, daughter of Philippe-Louis-François Badelard. Like others in the province, Panet lobbied for a legislative assembly. In 1792, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada for the Upper Town of Quebec; he was elected as the first speaker for the assembly. Bonaventure Panet
Bonaventure Panet (July 27, 1765 – March 12, 1846) was a businessman and politician in Lower Canada. Background Panet was born in Montreal in 1765, the son of Pierre Panet, who was a lawyer and a judge, and Marie-Anne Trefflé. He was one of the 17 children born to the family, six of whom died in infancy. He studied at Montreal's Collège Saint-Raphaël. He then moved to Quebec where he set up in business as a merchant at L'Assomption. In 1786, he married his cousin Marguerite, the daughter of Louis Dunière. He died at L'Assomption in 1846.
