Picturesque Ukraine
"Picturesque Ukraine" Is a series of drawings made by Taras Shevchenko in 1844. Made using the technique of etching, the series was originally meant to consist of twelve published prints each year. However, due to financial difficulties this was made impossible, and only one album of six prints was finished, which consisted of ''In Kyiv'', ''Vydubychi Monastery, Ship Council'', ''Fairy Tale'', ''Old Age'', and ''Gifts in Chyhyryn''. Taras Hryhorovych Shevchenko ( uk, Тарас Григорович Шевченко , pronounced without the middle name; – ), also known as Kobzar Taras, or simply Kobzar (a kobzar is a bard in Ukrainian culture), was a Ukraine, Ukrainian poet, writer, artist, public and political figure, folklore, folklorist and ethnography, ethnographer.Taras Shevchenko in the Great Soviet Encyclopedia, 3rd Edition. 1970-1979 (in English) His literary heritage is regarded to be the foundation of modern Ukrainian literature and, to a large extent, the modern Ukrainian language, though this is different from the language of his poems. Taras Shevchenko National Museum
National Museum Taras Shevchenko () is a museum in Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine, dedicated to the life and work of the painter and national poet, Taras Shevchenko. History The museum and its collection originated as part of an initiative by friends of Shevchenko to preserve his legacy shortly after his death. By 1897 the collection had grown and it was collectively transferred to the Museum of Ukrainian Antiquities, which was later merged into Chernihiv Historical Museum ( uk). In 1926 the Shevchenko Institute in Kharkiv was founded, which became the home of the collection, and an initial Taras Shevchenko Museum operated as a section of the manuscripts department of the Institute. In 1939, the Council of People's Commissars of the USSR decided to fund a major retrospective exhibition, and by 1940 the decision was made to found a central museum commemorating the artist. Vydubychi Monastery
Vydubychi Monastery ( ua, Видубицький монастир ''Vydubyts'kyi monastyr'') is an historic monastery in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. During the Soviet period it housed the NANU Institute of Archaeology. History The monastery was established between 1070 and 1077 by Vsevolod, son of Yaroslav the Wise. It was a family cloister of Vsevolod's son Vladimir Monomakh and his descendants. The monastery, and the neighbourhood in present-day Kyiv where it is located, was named after an old Slavic legend about the pagan god Perun and the Grand Prince Vladimir the Great of Kyiv. The word "Vydubychi" comes from the word ''Vydobychi'' → ''Vydobych'' → ''Vydobech'' ( ua, Видобичі → Видобич → Видобеч) which means "to swim up", "emerge from water". The legend has it that Vladimir ordered the wooden figures of Perun (the Thunder God) and other pagan gods dumped into the Dnieper River during the mass Baptism of Kyiv.
