Ripon, Wisconsin
Ripon is a city in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,733 at the 2010 census. The city is surrounded by the Town of Ripon. Ripon is home to the Little White Schoolhouse, the commonly recognized birthplace of the Republican Party. History Founding Ripon was founded in 1849 by David P. Mapes, a former New York steamboat captain. Within two years the city had absorbed the nearby commune of Ceresco, established in 1844 by the Wisconsin Phalanx, a group of settlers inspired by the communitarian socialist philosophy of Charles Fourier. Mapes was a founder of Ripon College, originally incorporated as Brockway College in 1851. The city was named for the English cathedral city of Ripon, North Yorkshire, by John S. Publius Virgilius Lawson
Publius Virgilius Lawson (December 1, 1853 – December 1, 1920) was a lawyer, historian, manufacturer and politician from Menasha, Wisconsin. Biography Publius Virgilius Lawson was born in Corning, New York. His father, Publius Virgilius Lawson Sr, was a carpenter and builder, born in 1825. In 1856 he decided to seek opportunity in Wisconsin. He travelled there first by himself, found work in his trade, and sent for his family in December of that year. In 1858 he founded the P. V. Lawson Company, a manufacturer of doors, sashes, blinds, wagon wheels, and other wagon products. He was involved in organizing the first bank in Menasha, and he was Menasha's first mayor, beginning in 1874. He died in 1881 at the age of 53. The son Publius (subject of this article) was educated in the schools of Menasha, and graduated from Menasha High School in 1872. Wisconsin State Assembly
The Wisconsin State Assembly is the lower house of the Wisconsin Legislature. Together with the smaller Wisconsin Senate, the two constitute the legislative branch of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. Representatives are elected for two-year terms, elected during the fall elections. If a vacancy occurs in an Assembly seat between elections, it may be filled only by a special election. The Wisconsin Constitution limits the size of the State Assembly to between 54 and 100 members inclusive. Armine Pickett
Armine Pickett (July 10, 1800April 25, 1875) was an American farmer, politician, and Wisconsin pioneer. He was the first white settler in the town of Utica, Winnebago County, Wisconsin, and the namesake of Pickett, Wisconsin. He also served one term in the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing southern Winnebago County in the 1861 session. Biography Armine Pickett was born in July 1800. He resided for some time at Litchfield, Ohio, before moving west to the Wisconsin Territory in 1840. In Wisconsin, he initially settled in Jefferson County, but went north in the fall of 1845 and eventually selected to settle in what is now the town of Utica, Winnebago County, Wisconsin. Although his time in Jefferson County was brief, it did have a lasting impact on the economy of the state due to the actions of his wife, Anne. Utica (formerly Welaunee) is a town in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,299 at the 2010 census. The unincorporated communities of Elo, Fisk, and Pickett are located in the town. History The town's first European settlement was in 1846, the area then being part of the Town of Rushford, Wisconsin. Oshkosh, Wisconsin
Oshkosh is a city in Winnebago County, Wisconsin, of which it is the county seat. The city had a population of 66,816 in 2020, making it the ninth-largest city in Wisconsin. It is also adjacent to the Town of Oshkosh. History Oshkosh was named for Menominee Chief Oshkosh, whose name meant "claw" (cf. Ojibwe ''oshkanzh'', "the claw"). State Trunk Highway 44 (often called Highway 44, STH-44 or WIS 44) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It runs in a diagonal southwest–northeast direction in east-central Wisconsin from Pardeeville to Oshkosh. Route description WIS 44 begins in Pardeeville, in Columbia County at the junction with WIS 22. It heads northeast out of town. It has a brief cosigning with WIS 33 for a mile before continuing to head northeast. WIS 33's control cities at this point are Portage to the west and Fox Lake to the east. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Area code 920 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for a large area of eastern Wisconsin. It was created on July 26, 1997, in a split from area code 414, which formerly served the entire eastern third of the state. 920 is scheduled to be overlaid with area code 274 on May 5, 2023. In 2008, service providers recognized the need for a second area code for northeastern Wisconsin, leading the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin to approve an overlay plan with new area code 274. However, the Great Recession, number porting, a decline in landlines, and other factors delayed that requirement for fifteen years during which implementation was deferred several times.
