''Give Blood'' is the debut album from the Brighton-based band, Brakes. The album was recorded onto 2" tape and mixed onto 1/4" tape in January 2005. Brakes and their 22-year-old producer, Iain Gore, also removed all computer screens from the studio for the week and all the tracks were recorded live, with the duets being recorded around one mike. The only overdubs were lap steel on "Jackson" by bassist Marc Beatty, piano by drummer Alex White and guitar by Tom White on "I Can't Stand To Stand Beside You". The album also features Matt Eaton of Actress Hands on "The Most Fun", Liela Moss of The Duke Spirit on "Jackson" and Rose, Becki and Julia of The Pipettes on "Sometimes Always". The album was voted best of 2005 by the prestigious indie music shop Rough Trade. Brakes (band)
Brakes are an English rock band, formed in 2003 in Brighton. The band consists of vocalist/guitarist Eamon Hamilton, lead guitarist Thomas White, bassist Marc Beatty and drummer Alex White. They are known as Brakesbrakesbrakes in the United States. Biography Brakes formed in 2003, when Thomas White and Alex White of The Electric Soft Parade saw Eamon Hamilton perform a solo gig supporting The Lonesome Organist in Brighton. Marc Beatty of Mockin' Bird Studio and The Tenderfoot (who also worked with British Sea Power, engineering their debut single and recording tracks for their debut album) was also soon recruited, and the band set about recording their debut single, " Pick Up the Phone", which was released on Tugboat Records in 2004. Rebecca Stephens (singer)
Rebecca Stephens (born 30 July 1982) is a singer, formerly with British band The Pipettes, where she was commonly known as RiotBecki. The Pipettes Brighton-born Stephens normally stood stage left with The Pipettes. She is a self-described feminist and has a degree in media studies and film and video production from Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College having written her dissertation on early Seventies hardcore pornography. She sang the verses of the single "Your Kisses Are Wasted on Me" and lead on album tracks "Tell Me What You Want" and "One Night Stand", which (along with "Feminist Complaints" and album track "A Winter's Sky") she also wrote. In April 2005, she contributed vocals to the hip-hop album '' Flowers & Trees'' by fellow Brightonian Y.Misdaq aka Yoshi, and has also provided vocals for The Blind Cowboys, a project by bandmate Jon Cassette and Thomas White of The Electric Soft Parade and Brakes on their cover of "Sometimes Always". Rose Elinor Dougall
Rose Elinor Dougall (born 13 March 1986) is an English singer, songwriter and musician. She was a member of The Pipettes and has performed with Mark Ronson. She also performs and records as a solo artist. Career Dougall joined The Pipettes in 2003 after being introduced to the initial line-up by Monster Bobby at The Basketmakers pub in Brighton. With The Pipettes, Dougall took lead vocals on the singles "Judy" and "Dirty Mind". During her time with The Pipettes, she also provided guest vocals for The Young Playthings, Brakes and Dr Colossus. On 18 April 2008, it was announced in a blog post on the band's Myspace that Dougall and bandmate Rebecca Stephens had amicably left the band "to pursue other musical projects". Thomas White (musician)
Thomas White (born 30 April 1984) is an English, Brighton-based musician. Along with their brother, Alex, they form the nucleus of psych-pop band The Electric Soft Parade. They have released four albums and a six-track EP. They also contributes vocals and guitar to cult Brighton super-group Brakes, and drums and bass to Restlesslist and Clowns. Besides performing solo and in their own groups, White regularly appears as a session player for, among others, Patrick Wolf, British Sea Power, Levellers and Sparks. Early life Educated at Davigdor Infants, Somerhill Juniors and Hove Park schools, they signed their first record deal (with DB Records) whilst still 16 and studying for their GCSEs. Eamon Hamilton is frontman of Brakes and formerly played keyboards for Sea Power. __TOC__ Biography Eamon Peter Hamilton is the singer and songwriter for the band Brakes, born on 20 August 1975 in Stewart, BC, Canada and raised in Stroud, Gloucestershire, UK. Hamilton moved to Brighton in 2000 and in 2002 was recruited to play keyboards for British Sea Power live. The band were reportedly impressed that—without warning and during a song without keyboards— Hamilton went off into the crowd banging a drum. Due to touring commitments with Brakes, Hamilton left British Sea Power in January 2006. Hamilton has recorded and played live under a number of different guises. William Reid (musician)
William Adam Reid (born 28 October 1958) is a Scottish musician, songwriter and singer, best known as being lead guitarist, songwriter, co-founder and occasional singer of the Scottish alternative rock band, The Jesus and Mary Chain. Musical career The Jesus and Mary Chain William, along with his brother Jim, the lead singer, formed the (at times unstable) core of the band. The early sound of The Jesus and Mary Chain was defined by Reid's extremely distorted and feedback laden hollowbody guitar work, often using the Shin-ei Companion WF-8 fuzz-wah box to get his unique sound, which verged on white noise. The Pipettes
The Pipettes were a British indie pop girl group formed in 2003 in Brighton by Robert "Monster Bobby" Barry. The group has released two albums, '' We Are The Pipettes'', and '' Earth vs. The Pipettes'' and released numerous singles to support it; the most successful being "Pull Shapes" which peaked at No. 26 in the UK Singles Chart. The group was active from 2003 to 2011. The group was originally composed of Julia Clarke-Lowes, Rose Elinor Dougall and Rebecca Stephens. At the time of their debut album Clarke-Lowes had been replaced by Gwenno Saunders. In 2008, Dougall and Stephens also left the group.
