Josef Poelt
Josef Poelt was a botanist, bryologist and lichenologist. He held the chair in Systematic Botany and Plant Geography at the Free University of Berlin (1965 - 1972) and then was head of the Botanical Institute and Botanical Garden of Graz University, Austria (1972 - 1990). Early life and education Josef Poelt was born in 1925 in the village of Pöcking in Bavaria, Germany, where his parents ran a guest house. He began to study botany at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich but due to the start of the Second World War he joined the German army and was assigned to an intelligence unit in Russia. After illness and time as a prisoner of war of the British, he returned to university study in 1946 and graduated with a bachelor's degree in natural sciences in 1950. Poelt was influenced by a botanist, H. Paul, to study non-flowering plants. He made use of the lichen herbarium at the university's botanic garden which contained nineteenth century specimens collected by Ferdinand Arno ... Lichen Genera
A lichen ( , ) is a composite organism that arises from algae or cyanobacteria living among filaments of multiple fungi species in a mutualistic relationship.Introduction to Lichens – An Alliance between Kingdoms . University of California Museum of Paleontology. Lichens have properties different from those of their component organisms. They come in many colors, sizes, and forms and are sometimes plant-like, but are not s. They may have tiny, leafless branches (); flat leaf-like structures ( [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Physconia Rossica
''Physconia rossica'' is a species of saxicolous (rock-dwelling), foliose lichen in the family Physciaceae. It is found in mountainous regions of the Russian Far East, Siberia, and Eastern Europe. Taxonomy The lichen was formally described as a new species in 2008 by Gennadii Urbanavichus. The type specimen was collected near the village Nazinovo in the Nazhinovskaya Shida River valley ( Ishimbayevo district, Southern Ural) at an altitude of . There the lichen was found growing on mosses and soil over rocks at the base of a steep south slope consisting of calcareous rock outcrops. Molecular phylogenetic analysis suggests that ''P. rossica'' forms a monophyletic group in genus ''Physconia'', sister to a group containing '' P. elegantula'', '' P. perisidiosa'', and '' P. venusta''. Description ''Physconia rossica'' has an greyish-brown to brown, orbicular to irregular thallus measuring in diameter that is fairly loosely attached to its substratum. The indi ... Physconia Jacutica
''Physconia jacutica'' is a species of saxicolous (rock-dwelling), foliose lichen in the family Physciaceae. It is found in the Russian Far East. Taxonomy The lichen was formally described as a new species in 2007 by Gennadii Urbanavichus, Teuvo Ahti, and Katileena Lohtander. The type specimen was collected on the bank of the Lena River near Elanka ( Khangalasskiy Ulus, Sakha Republic) at an altitude of about . There the lichen was found growing abundantly on rocks at the base of a dolomitic cliff from the Cambrian. The habitat in that location is dry and hot with steppe-like vegetation. The authors note that among the high dolomite cliffs, the lichen "is so abundant that it gives a bluish-white tint to the whole landscape". Molecular phylogenetic analysis suggests that ''P. jacutica'' groups together in a clade with '' P. grumosa'', '' P. lecuoleiptes'', '' P. kurokawae'', and '' P. muscigena''.
