Phyllis Monkman
Phyllis Monkman (8 January 1892 – 2 December 1976) was a British stage and film actress.Moore p.56 She was married to the entertainer Laddie Cliff. In the early years of her career, she was often partnered on stage by Jack Buchanan and appeared in the silent film '' Her Heritage'' with him in 1919. She was also prominent in the cast of the revue ''The Co-Optimists'' and reprised her role in the film adaptation. After this point she was increasingly confined to supporting character parts. She was romantically linked to George VI. ''Blackmail'' is a 1929 British thriller drama film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Anny Ondra, John Longden, and Cyril Ritchard. Based on the 1928 play of the same name by Charles Bennett, the film is about a London woman who is blackmailed after killing a man who tries to rape her. After starting production as a silent film, British International Pictures decided to adapt ''Blackmail'' into a separate sound film. It became the first successful European talkie; a silent version was released for theaters not equipped for sound (at 6,740 feet), with the sound version (7,136 feet) released at the same time. Plot In 1870s South Africa, Englishman Stafford Parker tries to persuade Boer leader Jan Bloem to hand over control of a potential diamond field. ''Carnival'' is a 1946 British drama film about a ballet dancer of the Edwardian era, directed by Stanley Haynes and starring Sally Gray, Michael Wilding, Stanley Holloway and Jean Kent. It is based on the 1912 novel of the same name by Compton Mackenzie, which had previous been made into a 1932 film version ''Dance Pretty Lady'' by Anthony Asquith.
