In biology, a phylum (; plural: phyla) is a level of classification or taxonomic rank below kingdom and above class. Traditionally, in botany the term division has been used instead of phylum, although the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants accepts the terms as equivalent. Depending on definitions, the animal kingdom Animalia contains about 31 phyla, the plant kingdom Plantae contains about 14 phyla, and the fungus kingdom Fungi contains about 8 phyla. A language family is a group of languages related through descent from a common ''ancestral language'' or ''parental language'', called the proto-language of that family. ''Phyla'' is a genus of eustarid plants in the verbena family, Verbenaceae. The name is derived from the Greek word φυλή (''phyle''), meaning "tribe", and most likely refers to the tightly clustered flowers or the spreading, mat-like growth. Members of the genus are known generally as fogfruit or frogfruit. Species once classified in the genus ''Lippia'' may be known by the common name lippia.
