Phultala ( bn, ফুলতলা) is an upazila of Khulna District in the Division of Khulna, Bangladesh. Geography Phultala is located at . It has 12867 households and total area 56.83 km2. Demographics As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Phultala has a population of 67930. Males constitute 51.01% of the population, and females 48.99%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 36368. Phultala has an average literacy rate of 41.1% (7+ years), and the national average of 32.4% literate. Khulna–Mongla Port Line
Khulna–Mongla Port line is a under-construction broad gauge railway to connect the country with Mongla Port. The Rupsha Rail Bridge is located on this route. History In 2010, the government planned to build a railway from Khulna to Mongla Port. A budget of was fixed for the construction of this railway, a joint financing of India and Bangladesh. But in 2015 it increased to . The deadline for the construction project was 2018. Due to the change in the route of the railway, the construction of a bridge over the Rupsa River became final and the length of the proposed railway increased from 53 km to 65 km. Darshana–Jessore–Khulna Line
Darshana–Jessore–Khulna line is a broad-gauge railway of Bangladesh Railway. The line is maintained and operated by West Zone. History The British Indian government constructed the Chilahati–Parbatipur–Santahar–Darshana line in 1878 and the Kolkata–Jessore to Khulna line in 1878 to start a direct service from Calcutta to Siliguri. But after the partition of the country in 1947, the railway communication between the two countries was cut off. The direct rail link between Khulna in then East Pakistan and North Bengal was disrupted. So very quickly the then provincial government quickly laid a new railway line from Darshana Junction to Jessore Junction by 1951. The Eastern Bengal Railway (full name: "Eastern Bengal Railway Company"; shortened EBR) was one of the pioneering railway companies that operated from 1857 to 1942, in Bengal and Assam provinces of British India.
