Carl Ludwig Von Willdenow
Carl Ludwig Willdenow (22 August 1765 – 10 July 1812) was a German botanist, pharmacist, and plant taxonomist. He is considered one of the founders of phytogeography, the study of the geographic distribution of plants. Willdenow was also a mentor of Alexander von Humboldt, one of the earliest and best known phytogeographers. He also influenced Christian Konrad Sprengel, who pioneered the study of plant pollination and floral biology. Biography Willdenow was born in Berlin and studied medicine and botany at the University of Halle. After studying pharmaceutics at Wieglieb College, Langensalza and in medicine at Halle, he returned to Berlin to work at his father's pharmacy located in the Unter den Linden. His early interest in botany was kindled by his uncle J. G. Gleditsch and he started a herbarium collection in his teenage years. In 1794 he became a member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences. Kaiser Wilhelm's Land
Kaiser-Wilhelmsland ("Emperor William's Land") formed part of German New Guinea (german: Deutsch-Neuguinea), the South Pacific protectorate of the German Empire. Named in honour of Wilhelm I, who reigned as German Emperor () from 1871 to 1888, it included the northern part of present-day Papua New Guinea. From 1884 until 1920 the territory was a protectorate ( de , Schutzgebiet) of the German Empire. Udo Max Hollrung
Max Hollrung (born 25 October 1858 in Hosterwitz, Dresden, died 5 May 1937 in Halle (Saale)) was a German botanist, and an early specialist in phytopathology. He was the first university teacher in Germany to be appointed to teach on the subject of plant diseases and plant protection at a university. Life and work Hollrung was the son of a master mason. He studied natural sciences, in particular, chemistry, acquiring his doctorate from the University of Leipzig in 1882. After a three-year assistantship at the Agriculture-Chemical Experimental Station in Halle (Saale), he participated in a research expedition to New Guinea from 1886 to 1888. At his return, Julius Kühn transferred him to the Agricultural Institute of the University of Halle, to work in the newly established Research Center for Nematode Control.
