Phoebus (also known as Apollo) is one of the Twelve Olympians, Olympian deities in Greek and Roman mythology. The name is often used as a poetic term for Sun, the Sun. Phoebus, Virginia
Phoebus (known as Chesapeake City from 1871-1899) is a formerly incorporated town located in Elizabeth City County on the Virginia Peninsula in eastern Virginia. Upon incorporation in 1900, it was named in honor of local businessman Harrison Phoebus (1840–1886), who is credited with convincing the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) to extend its tracks to the town from Newport News. The town was consolidated by a slim margin during a 1952 public referendum with the independent city of Hampton, and adopted the latter's name. Phoebus is now an important historic neighborhood of Hampton and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. ''Phöbus — Ein Journal für die Kunst'' was a literary journal published by Heinrich von Kleist and Adam Heinrich Müller in Dresden between January 1808 and December 1808, in twelve issues grouped into nine instalments. Many of Kleist's most famous works appeared in print for the first time within its covers. Original plans The journal's name is that of the sun-god Phoebus, generally associated with the Greek Apollo. The frontispiece of the first issue, designed by Ferdinand Hartmann, shows Phoebus in a chariot, drawn by sun-horses over the town of Dresden. Kleist wrote: "Thunder on, O thou, with thy flaming steeds, / Phoebus, bringer of day, into infinite space!" The periodical was modelled on Friedrich Schiller's journal ''Die Horen''. Project Rover
Project Rover was a United States project to develop a nuclear-thermal rocket that ran from 1955 to 1973 at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory (LASL). It began as a United States Air Force project to develop a nuclear-powered upper stage for an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The project was transferred to NASA in 1958 after the Sputnik crisis triggered the Space Race. It was managed by the Space Nuclear Propulsion Office (SNPO), a joint agency of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), and NASA. Project Rover became part of NASA's Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application (NERVA) project and henceforth dealt with the research into nuclear rocket reactor design, while NERVA involved the overall development and deployment of nuclear rocket engines, and the planning for space missions. Bristol Phoebus
The Bristol Phoebus was an early turbojet engine developed by Bristol Engines. It was based on the gas generator core of the Bristol Proteus. The Phoebus was used for development but only a handful were made. As with other Bristol engines, it took its name from classical mythology. Origins Bristol avoided gas turbine development work at first, as Roy Fedden considered that Bristol's limited wartime resources were already occupied with the enlarged generation of sleeve valve radial engines such as the Hercules and Centaurus then under development and that a useful turbojet engine was at least ten years away. This policy changed under Frank Owner and this became one of the reasons behind Fedden's falling out with Bristol and his departure from them in 1942. The Bölkow Phoebus is a glass fibre composite competition sailplane, designed and produced in Germany in the 1960s. Large numbers were built, achieving success at some national contests, and many remain active. Design and development The Phoebus was designed at a time when glider manufacturers were moving away from all-wood aircraft towards composite structures. Bölkow had been among the early leaders of this change with their Phönix T sailplane in the late 1950s, which used balsa/glassfibre sandwich construction. The Phoebus was built in the same way. Phoebus High School
Phoebus High School is a public high school in Hampton, Virginia. Named after the neighborhood and former town of Phoebus, Virginia, Phoebus, it is the newest of the four high schools in Hampton City Schools. It is considered unique for the IDEA Academy which includes Video Media Design, Engineering, and Video Game Programming. Phoebus continues to add nationally board certified teachers and several students have earned industry certifications via the CTE department. History Phoebus High School opened in 1975 as the newest high school in the City of Hampton, Virginia. The Phoebus cartel was an oligopoly that controlled the manufacture and sale of incandescent light bulbs. They appropriated market territories and lowered the useful life of such bulbs. Corporations based in Europe and the United States founded the cartel on January 15, 1925 in Geneva. Phoebus based itself in Switzerland. The corporation named itself ''Phœbus S.A.
