Philympia 1970
The Philympia 1970 International Stamp Exhibition was an international stamp exhibition held under Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP) patronage. It was held at the Empire Hall, Olympia, London from 18 to 26 September 1970. Special three-colour postmarks were used on each of the eight days of the exhibition. A octagonal tower of British stamps designed by Andrew Chadwick of Hulme Chadwick & Partners with graphics by Barry O'Dwyer, was the main feature. Relevant British stamp issues A set of three stamps were issued on 18 September to publicise the exhibition (S.G. 835/837). They were designed by David Gentleman and depicted the 1840 Penny Black (5d.), the 1847 1s. embossed (9d.) and the 1855 4d. surface-printed stamp (1/6). A 5/- stamp booklet containing 12 5d. stamps was also issued. Stamp Exhibition
A philatelic exhibition is an exhibition of stamps and postal history where stamp collectors (philatelists) compete for medals. The displays are shown in glass frames, and the exhibition is normally accompanied by stamp dealer bourses and post office stands where stamps and other philatelic items may be purchased. Many philatelic exhibitions are regular events, held annually or at some other frequency and they are important events in the philatelic calendar. Types of exhibition Exhibitions are normally of international, national, regional or local scope. They may also be for specific collecting interests, for instance the Eurothema' exhibition for thematic collecting. The Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP) was founded on 18 June 1926, and is the world federation for philately based in Zürich, Switzerland. Olympia London, sometimes referred to as the Olympia Exhibition Centre, is an exhibition centre, event space and conference centre in West Kensington, in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham, London, England. A range of international trade and consumer exhibitions, conferences and sporting events are staged at the venue. There is an adjacent railway station at Kensington (Olympia) which is both a London Overground station, and a London Underground station. The direct District Line spur to the station only runs on weekends. Background The complex first opened in 1886. The Grand Hall and Pillar Hall were completed in 1885. David Gentleman
David William Gentleman (born 11 March 1930) is an English artist. He studied art and painting at the Royal College of Art under Edward Bawden and John Nash. He has worked in watercolour, lithography and wood engraving, at scales ranging from platform-length murals for Charing Cross Underground Station in London to postage stamps and logos. His themes include paintings of landscape and environmental posters to drawings of street life and protest placards. He has written and illustrated many books, mostly about countries and cities. He also designed a number of British commemorative postage stamps. Mohamed Dadkhah
Dr. Mohamed Dadkhah (1910–1980) was a world-renowned philatelist of Iran. Collecting interests Dadkhah specialized in the collection of postage stamps of Iran and Bushire. He is known for his extensive collections, and his Iran presentation at the philatelic exhibition Philympia 1970 in London won him the gold award. Philatelic literature Dadkhah, in 1960, wrote the book ''Emissions du Type “Lion” de l'Iran 1865-1879'' (also entitled ''The Lion Stamps of Persia'' in English) and received the Crawford Medal for his effort. Philatelic activity Dadkhah was active in the Iranian Philatelic Society which he founded, and remained president of, for the remainder of his life. Hiroyuki Kanai
was a Japanese businessman, writer and philatelist. Life Kanai's father was a wealthy Japanese businessman and at the age of five he began his first stamp collection. At 13, he intensified his hobby and while in university founded two stamp collecting clubs. His first degree was in engineering at Nihon University after which he studied political economy at Waseda University. He then worked for the textile machinery factory founded by one of his grandfathers. Later, he became president of a number of companies such as the Kanai Heavy Industry Co. Philately At first, Kanai was a general stamp collector but after World War II he specialised in the philately of Japan, Finland and the British colonies.
