Phillipsburg, Texas
Phillipsburg is an unincorporated community in southern Washington County, in the U.S. state of Texas. The very small rural community is located along State Highway 36 (SH 36) south of Brenham. Aside from the names of two local roads, the name Phillipsburg is no longer marked on modern maps. The cemetery and Lutheran church, which is still open for worship, are actually slightly to the south in neighboring Austin County. Geography Phillipsburg is situated on SH 36 at Old Phillipsburg Road, from downtown Brenham. Another source stated that the community is south of Brenham. At this point, the BNSF Railway runs roughly parallel with SH 36 and on the west side of the highway. Local roads include Bilski Lane which intersects with SH 36, a short distance north of Old Phillipsburg Road and goes a short way to the east-northeast. State Highway 36 (SH 36) runs from Freeport to Abilene. It was designated as the 36th Division Memorial Highway between Cameron and Sealy by the Texas Legislature in 1985. History SH 36 was originally proposed on November 21, 1917, as a route from Cisco to Waco. On December 20, 1917, this became part of SH 18. On November 20, 1917, an intercounty highway was designated from Goldthwaite to Temple. On January 24, 1918, the intercounty highway extended to Cameron. On March 18, 1918, the intercounty highway extended to Brenham. On March 20, 1918, SH 36 was designated as a route from Goldthwaite to Hearne. The Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway was a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway. From its starting point in Galveston, Texas, the railroad eventually extended northwestwards across the state to Sweetwater and northwards via Fort Worth to Purcell, Oklahoma. History 19th century In 1873, competition between the cities of Houston and Galveston was strong, and the Galveston, Houston & Henderson Railroad (GH&H) was the only rail link between the two cities. The competition between Houston and Galveston was fed by the quarantines, which were often imposed on Galveston traffic by Houston. These quarantines occurred almost annually and were based on yellow fever outbreaks and epidemics. Kenney, Texas
Kenney (also Kinney) is an unincorporated community in northern Austin County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 200 in 2000. It is located within the Greater Houston metropolitan area. History The area around Kenney was first settled in the 1820s with German immigrants arriving in the 1830s through 1900, but the community itself was not started until 1880 when a station on the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway between Brenham and Bellville and a post office was established. The community was originally named Thompson for its first postmaster JE Thompson.
