Phillips Family Disappearances
Eight-year-old Jayda Phillips, six-year-old Maverick Phillips, and five-year-old Ember Phillips disappeared with their father Tom Philips from the isolated rural Waikato town of Marokopa on 9 December 2021. New Zealand Police believe that the children were taken by their father to a location somewhere in the western Waikato, "within Marokopa or the surrounding areas” after a dispute with their mother. The family had previously been considered missing for 19 days in September of the same year, sparking a major search effort. Phillips's truck was found abandoned on the Marokopa shoreline and was swamped with seawater. Almost three weeks later, Phillips returned with the children, claiming that he had taken them on a camping trip in dense bush in an effort to clear his head. Marokopa
Marokopa is a rural community in Waitomo District and Waikato region of New Zealand. It is located close to the coast between Awakino and Kawhia Harbour. The meshblock includes the coastal township of Marokopa, at the mouth of the Marokopa River, and the south side of the small village of Awamarino, about upstream. The area was settled by forestry workers in the 19th century. It has been predominantly a farming locale since the early 20th century. In 1911 a large dairy factory was built, which mainly made butter which was shipped to Auckland. The Awamarino factory was enlarged in 1932, but closed in 1937. A telephone link to Te Kuiti was completed in 1914 and a service car ran on Tuesdays and Fridays from 1920. The town also had a post office, a flaxmill and a school (1908-1982). Te Anga
Te Anga is a rural community in the Waitomo District and Waikato region of New Zealand's North Island. Marokopa River runs through the area. The river is not safe to swim in due to high rates of E. coli, but farmers have put in plans to reduce water pollution. The area transitioned from sheep farming to more intensive dairy farming at the turn of the century. The local landscape consists of limestones, calcareous mudstones and sandstones Sandstone is a clastic sedimentary rock composed mainly of sand-sized (0.0625 to 2 mm) silicate grains.
