Phil Manning (footballer)
Phillip Charles Manning (9 October 1906 – 4 November 1930) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Manning, a student of Xavier College, came to Hawthorn from Mentone. He played in the final two rounds of the 1927 VFL season, against Melbourne and Richmond. On 4 November 1930, Manning was the passenger of a motor cycle which struck a parked wagon on Balcombe Road in Mentone. Phil Manning (musician)
Philip John Manning (born 1948) is an Australian blues music, blues singer-songwriter and guitarist. Manning has been a member of various groups including Chain (band), Chain and has had a solo career. As a member of Chain, Manning co-wrote their January 1971 single "Black and Blue (Chain song), Black and Blue" which became number one on the Melbourne charts and also Judgement, which reached number two in Sydney. The related album, ''Toward the Blues'' followed in September and peaked in the top 10 albums chart. Biography Early years Philip John Manning was born in Devonport, Tasmania in 1948. He has a brother Dennis Manning who is also a musician. Phil Manning's early bands were Anonymous Incorporated and Cocaine Spell – he was in the latter with drummer, Charlie Watts, and the pianist, John A. Bird.
