Philippines Open International Championships
The Philippines Open International Championships and later known as PHILTA International Championships or simply the Philippines Open was an international men's and women's clay then later court tennis tournament founded in 1918 as the Philippine Championships . It was first organised by the Philippine Tennis Association (PhilTA) and first played at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center, Manila, Philippines. This international tournament was part of the ILTF World Circuit until 1978 when it was discontinued. History In 1906 the Manila (Philippine Islands) Lawn Tennis Association was founded. The Manila International Championships also known as the Manila Open was a men's tennis tournament played at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center in Manila, Philippines from 1973-1978 and again in 1981. Edgar Moon
Edgar "Gar" Moon (3 December 1904 – 26 May 1976) was a tennis player from Australia who was best known for winning the 1930 Australian Championships – Men's singles title. He also won the 1932 Men's Doubles title with Jack Crawford. He won all three Men's titles at the Australian Championships. Moon was introduced to tennis by his parents at an early age. He went to the Brisbane Grammar School where he was encouraged to play cricket but he preferred to play tennis on his parents' clay court. Moon was largely self-taught and practised his skills playing against family in Cabooltura where his father had a dairy farm. Moon was tall and strong and had good technique, but lacked dedication to the game. Moon won his first national title at the 1929 Open when he teamed up with Daphne Akhurst to win the mixed doubles championship. Ryosuke Nunoi
was a tennis player from Japan. Early life Nunoi, who came from an affluent Osaka merchant family, was a student at Kobe Higher Commercial School (now called Kobe University). Career Nunoi was the youngest member of the Japanese squad that toured Australia in 1932 and played in a series of "Test matches" against the home side. In one of these matches he came close to upsetting Harry Hopman, but failed to convert set points in each of the two sets. He did however have a win over Jack Crawford in Perth. At the 1932 Australian Championships, Nunoi was a quarter-finalist in the singles, along with teammate Jiro Sato. Nunoi and Sato remained the only Japanese players to reach the quarter-finals at the Championships (later Australian Open) until they were joined by Kei Nishikori in 2012. Hyotaro Sato
Hyotaro Sato (1 June 1904 – 12 April 2006) was a Japanese tennis player. Born in Yokkaichi, Sato was an elder brother of tennis player Jiro Sato and studied at Kwansei Gakuin University. In 1930 and 1931 he toured with the Japan Davis Cup team, giving him the opportunity to feature in overseas tournaments. This included two appearances at the Wimbledon Championships. He won the Swiss and Düsseldorf international championships in 1930, beating Harry Hopman in the final of the latter. In 1931 he reached the fourth round of the French Championships, which included wins over René de Buzelet and Béla von Kehrling, before losing in five sets to the third seeded Christian Boussus. He was victorious in six of his eight Davis Cup singles rubbers. Sato became the first Japanese player to join the professional ranks in 1937. Mikhail Mikhailovich Youzhny (born 25 June 1982), nicknamed "Misha" and "Colonel" by his fans, is a Russian retired professional tennis player who was ranked inside the top 10 and was the Russian No. 1. The Manila Challenger (also known as the Philippine Open) was a tennis tournament held in Manila, Philippines 2016. The event is part of the ATP Challenger Tour and is played on outdoor hard courts. Ramesh Krishnan
Ramesh Krishnan (born 5 June 1961) is a tennis coach and former professional tennis player from India. As a junior player in the late 1970s, he won the singles titles at both, Wimbledon and the French Open. He went on to reach three Grand Slam quarterfinals in the 1980s and was a part of the Indian team captained by Vijay Amritraj which reached the final of the Davis Cup in 1987 against Sweden. Krishnan also beat then-world No. 1, Mats Wilander, at the 1989 Australian Open. He became India's Davis Cup captain in 2007. Early life Ramesh was born in Madras, India, and is the son of Ramanathan Krishnan who reached the Wimbledon semifinal twice in the 1960s.
