Philippines At The 2018 Asian Para Games
The Philippines participated at the 2018 Asian Para Games which was held in Jakarta, Indonesia from 6 to 13 October 2018. 57 athletes contested in 10 out of 18 events in the games with Francis Carlos Diaz serving as chef de mission of the Philippine delegation. According to Diaz, Filipino para-athletes had better preparation for this edition of the Games compared to the last edition held in 2014 in Incheon, South Korea. The Philippine Sports Commission, a sports government agency, has given an "astronomical" amount of financial aid to the athletes relative to aid given in the previous editions which was used to buy their training equipment and supplies and they had a year long of training similar to non para-athletes. They have also secured sponsorship from small-scale private firms. Jerrold Pete Macabio Mangliwan (born 17 October 1979) is a Filipino wheelchair racer who is a two-time Paralympian for the Philippines who competed in the 2016 and 2020 editions. In wheelchair racing, he competes in the T52 classification. Early life and education A native of Tabuk, Kalinga, Jerrold Pete Mangliwan was born on October 17, 1979. He would contract polio when he was two years old which rendered him paraplegiac. He studied at the Christian Learning Center and Saint Theresita's School Lubuagan for his secondary education. Adeline Dumapong
Adeline Dumapong-Ancheta (born December 13, 1973) is a Filipina Paralympic powerlifter. She became the first Filipina to win a Paralympic medal ever when she won bronze at the 2000 Summer Paralympics. Early life and education Adeline Dumapong was born in Kiangan, Ifugao to a family of six children. She contracted polio when she was three years old. She spent her elementary and high school days in Bahay Mapagmahal, a housing institution for youth with disabilities and went to school at NOH School for Crippled Children inside the compound of Philippine Orthopedic Center, Quezon City. Josephine Rebeta Medina (March 20, 1970 – September 2, 2021) was a Filipino table tennis player. Medina represented the Philippines at the 2012 and 2016 Summer Paralympics. Early career Medina was influenced to take up table tennis as a sport by her father who used to compete for the Philippines internationally. She was afflicted with poliomyelitis which affected the length of her legs. She competed with able-bodied players as a varsity player during her collegiate studies in order to cope with her family's financial problems. She managed to qualify for a place at the national table tennis team but was later told she could not compete due to her disabilities. Gary Adornado Bejino (born November 6, 1995) is a Filipino swimmer who competed at the 2020 Summer Paralympics. Early life Gary Bejino was born on November 6, 1995 and was the second eldest in a brood of six. His father is a laborer while his mother is a homemaker. At age 7, he acquired his disability when he was electrocuted when he held on to a live power cable. He sustained serious burns which required his right arm and left leg to be amputated. Achelle Hofilena Guion (born December 29, 1971) is a Filipino powerlifter who has competed in the 2012 Summer Paralympics. Early life and education Guion was born on December 29, 1971 in Manila, Philippines. She attended the Trinity University of Asia in Quezon City to pursue a course on business management and later worked as a production worker. Career Guion started her powerlifting career in 2003. Her acquired impairment was caused by the effects of poliomyelitis. She was among the three powerlifters who represented the Philippines in the 2012 Summer Olympics in London along with Adeline Dumapong and Agustin Kitan.
