Philippe Pierson
Philippe Pierson (4 January 1642 at Ath, County of Hainaut, Hainaut – 1688 at Lorette, Quebec) was a Belgian Society of Jesus, Jesuit missionary in North America. Life At the age of eighteen he entered the Jesuit novitiate at Tournai, and pursued his studies at Louvain, Belgium, Louvain, Lille, and Douai. He was an teacher at Armentières and Béthune before he went to New France in 1666. There he taught grammar in the college at Quebec, and presented a successful Jesuit theatre, Latin play on the Passion. The entry cites: Ed. Thwaites, ''Jesuit Relations'' (Cleveland, 1896–1901). After studying theology for two years he was ordained Catholic Priest, priest in 1669, then worked among the Amerindians at Prairie de la Madeleine and Sillery, Quebec City, Sillery. From 1673 to 1683 he worked to spread Christianity among the Hurons of the St. Ignace Mission. In a letter from St. Ignace he described how his church increased in numbers and grew strong in faith. County Of Hainaut
The County of Hainaut (french: Comté de Hainaut; nl, Graafschap Henegouwen; la, comitatus hanoniensis), sometimes spelled Hainault, was a territorial lordship within the medieval Holy Roman Empire that straddled what is now the border of Belgium and France. Its most important towns included Mons ( nl, Bergen), now in Belgium, and Valenciennes, now in France. The core of the county was named after the river Haine. It stretched southeast to include the ''Avesnois'' region and southwest to the Selle (Scheldt tributary). In the Middle Ages, it also gained control of part of the original ''pagus'' of Brabant to its north and the ''pagus'' of Oosterbant to the east, but they were not part of the old ''pagus'' of Hainaut. In modern terms, the original core of Hainaut consisted of the central part of the Belgian province of Hainaut, and the eastern part of the French ''département'' of Nord (the arrondissements of Avesnes-sur-Helpe and Valenciennes).
