Philippe Amaury
Philippe Amaury (6 March 1940 – 23 May 2006) was a French media tycoon, and the son of publisher Émilien Amaury. Éditions Philippe Amaury (EPA), the company he founded, publishes '' Le Parisien, ''a local newspaper in Paris, as well as the national journal ''Aujourd'hui''. In partnership with SNC L'Equipe, the group publishes the sports journals ''L'Équipe'', '' L'Équipe Magazine'', ''France Football'' and ''Vélo Magazine''. EPA owns the television channel ''L'Equipe TV''. Amaury Sport Organisation is one of the biggest sports promoters in France, organising events such as the Tour de France, the Dakar Rally and the Paris Marathon The Paris Marathon (french: Marathon de Paris) is an annual marathon hosted by the city of Paris, France. Émilien Amaury
Émilien Amaury (5 March 1909, in Étampes, France – 2 January 1977, in Chantilly, Oise, Chantilly) was a French publishing magnate whose company now organises the Tour de France. He worked with Philippe Pétain, head of the French government in the southern half of France during the second world war but used his position to find paper and other materials for the French Resistance. His links with Jacques Goddet, the organiser of the Tour de France, led to a publishing empire that included the daily sports paper, ''L'Équipe''. Amaury died after falling from his horse; his will led to six years of legal debate. Background Émilien Amaury was born in modest circumstances in the town of Étampes. Dakar Rally
The Dakar Rally (or simply "The Dakar"; formerly known as the "Paris–Dakar Rally") is an annual rally raid organised by the Amaury Sport Organisation. Most events since the inception in 1978 were staged from Paris, France, to Dakar, Senegal, but due to security threats in Mauritania, which led to the cancellation of the 2008 rally, events from 2009 to 2019 were held in South America. Since 2020, the rally has been held in Saudi Arabia. The event is open to amateur and professional entries, amateurs typically making up about eighty percent of the participants. The rally is an off-road endurance event. The terrain that the competitors traverse is much tougher than that used in conventional rallying, and the vehicles used are typically true off-road vehicles and motorcycles, rather than modified on-road vehicles. The Paris Marathon (french: Marathon de Paris) is an annual marathon hosted by the city of Paris, France. It is the marathon with the second-most finishers in the world, behind the New York City Marathon. Tour De France
The Tour de France () is an annual men's multiple-stage bicycle race primarily held in France, while also occasionally passing through nearby countries. Like the other Grand Tours (the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España), it consists of 21 stages, each a day long, over the course of 23 days, coinciding with the Bastille Day holiday. The Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) is part of the French media group Éditions Philippe Amaury. It organises the Tour de France and other cycling races, as well as golf, running, sailing and off-road motorsport events. The president of ASO is Jean-Etienne Amaury, son of EPA founder Philippe Amaury. Cycling The Tour de France was instituted by the newspaper '' L'Auto'' in 1903.
