Philip Green Wright
Philip Green Wright (October 3, 1861 – September 4, 1934) was an American economist who in 1928 first proposed the use of instrumental variables estimation as the earliest known solution to the identification problem in econometrics. In a book review published in 1915 he wrote one of the first explanations of the identification problem. His primary topic of applied research was tariff policy, and he wrote several books on the topic. He also wrote poetry, was a mentor to the poet and author Carl Sandburg, and published some of Sandburg's earliest works. Wright was the father of geneticist Sewall Wright. Early life Wright was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1861 to John Seward Wright and Mary Clark Green Wright. His grandfather was Elizur Wright, an abolitionist and pioneer of life insurance regulation. Phillip Arundell Wright, (20 July 1889 – 30 August 1970), Australian pastoralist and philanthropist, was the second Chancellor of the University of New England from 1960 until 1970. Biography Born on the property Wongwibinda, near Armidale, New South Wales in 1889, Wright was the sixth child of Albert and May Wright (née Mackenzie). His father died in 1890, and Phillip was raised by his mother, who carried on the running of the Wongwibinda station east of Armidale after her husband’s death and subsequently purchased Wallamumbi, properties that formed the basis of the Wright family’s holdings for one hundred years. Wright was home-schooled by his sister, and then attended Sydney Church of England Grammar School, and Bedford School in England. Philip Quincy Wright (December 28, 1890 – October 17, 1970) was an American political scientist based at the University of Chicago known for his pioneering work and expertise in international law, international relations, and security studies. Biography Born in Medford, Massachusetts, Wright received his B.A. from Lombard College in 1912. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois in 1915. He also received an LL.D. He taught at Harvard University and the University of Minnesota before joining the department of social sciences at the University of Chicago in 1923. Philip Alan Wright (1903-1968) was an English cricketer active from 1921 to 1929 who played for Northamptonshire. He appeared in 93 first-class matches as a righthanded batsman who bowled right arm medium pace. One of three brothers who played cricket, Wright was born in Kettering on 16 May 1903 and died there on 21 December 1968. He scored 1,459 runs with a highest score of 83 and took 343 wickets with a best performance of six for 37. Canada, represented by the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC), competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, from August 8 to 24, 2008. Canadian athletes had competed in every Summer Olympic Games since 1900 with the exception of 1980, which were boycotted in protest of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Canada sent 332 athletes in 25 sports, the seventh largest team at the games and Canada's largest since 1988. Canada did not send a team in handball, volleyball or basketball.
