Philip Thorn
Philip Leslie Thorn (born 17 November 1951) is a former English cricketer. Thorn is a right-handed batsman who bowled slow left-arm orthodox. He was born at St George, Bristol. His father, John Thorn, became captain of the local cricket club. Thorn made his first-class debut for Gloucestershire against Surrey in 1974 County Championship. Thorn played 3 further first-class matches in 1974, the last of which came against Essex. In his 4 first-class matches, he scored 45 runs at a batting average of 11.25, with a high score of 25. With the ball he took 4 wickets at a bowling average of 56.75, with best figures of 2/53. Thorn also made his debut in List A cricket for Gloucestershire. His debut List A match came against Lancashire in the 1974 John Player League. This was the only List A match he played for Gloucestershire. St George, Bristol
St George is a district of Bristol, England on the Eastern edge of the city boundary. St George was originally outside the city boundary in Gloucestershire, the terminus of the tram line from Bristol was in Beaconsfield Road. It became a civil parish (Bristol St George) in 1866, and briefly an urban district from 1894 to 1898. The parish and urban district were absorbed into Bristol in 1898. Caught is a method of dismissing a batsman in cricket. A batsman is out caught if the batsman hits the ball, from a legitimate delivery, with the bat, and the ball is caught by the bowler or a fielder before it hits the ground. The 1983 NatWest Trophy was an English limited overs county cricket tournament which was held between 29 June and 3 September 1983. The third NatWest Trophy competition, it was won by Somerset who defeated Kent by 24 runs in the final at Lord's. Format The seventeen first-class counties were joined by thirteen Minor Counties. This was a change from the previous versions of the competition, where only five Minor Counties were permitted to take part. Northamptonshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Northamptonshire. Its limited overs team is called the Northants Steelbacks – a reference to the Northamptonshire Regiment which was formed in 1881. The name was supposedly a tribute to the soldiers' apparent indifference to the harsh discipline imposed by their officers. The National Counties Cricket Association Knockout Cup was started in 1983 as a knockout one-day competition for the National Counties in English cricket. At first it was known as the ''English Industrial Estates Cup'', before being called the ''Minor Counties Knock Out Competition'' from 1986 to 1987, the ''Holt Cup'' from 1988 to 1992, the ''MCC Trophy'' from 1993 to 1998, the ''ECB 38-County Cup'' from 1999 to 2002, the ''MCCA Knockout Trophy'' from 2003 to 2005.
