Philip Jones Brass Ensemble
The Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, founded in 1951 by trumpeter Philip Jones, was one of the first modern classical brass ensembles to be formed. The group played either as a quintet or as a ten-piece, for larger halls. It toured and recorded extensively, and numerous arrangements were commissioned, many of which were bequeathed on Jones' death to the library of the Royal Northern College of Music. The ensemble recorded Leonard Salzedo's signature fanfare for the Open University's television transmissions. Following Philip Jones' retirement in 1986, a number of the members of the group continued to collaborate, yet changed their name to London Brass. Philip Jones (musician)
Philip Jones (12 March 1928 – 17 January 2000) was a British trumpeter and leader of an internationally famous brass chamber music ensemble. Philip Jones was born in Bath, Somerset, Bath, England. In 1944 he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music. He became principal trumpet for most major London orchestras: The Royal Philharmonic (1956–60), the Philharmonia (1960–64), the Philharmonic (1964–65), the New Philharmonia (1965–67) and the BBC Symphony (1967–71). His playing continues a line of English trumpeters that stretches back to Ernest Hall. In 1951 he had formed the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, one of the first brass ensembles working regularly as a stable group. They grew from four members to ten and larger for special projects. Eric Crees
Eric Crees (born 1952) was appointed Principal Trombone of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (London) in 2000. Before that he spent twenty-seven years at the London Symphony Orchestra, twenty as Co-Principal Trombone. He is also a noted brass conductor, composer, arranger and teacher. Education Eric Crees was born in London in 1952 and studied at Wandsworth School, where he worked with professional orchestras & conductors in the boy's choir. Of particular importance was the school's long association with Benjamin Britten, who wrote a solo part for Eric in '' Children's Crusade''. ''West Side Story'' is a musical conceived by Jerome Robbins with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, and a book by Arthur Laurents. Justin Connolly
Justin Riveagh Connolly (11 August 1933 – 29 September 2020) was a British composer and teacher. Life Justin Connolly was born on 11 August 1933 in London. He was the son of John D'Arcy-Dawson, a journalist and author, and his wife Barbara (née Little). He changed his surname from D'Arcy-Dawson to that of his father's biological father in his early 20s. He was educated at Westminster School, went on to national service in the Army, and briefly studied law at the Middle Temple before deciding on a career in music. From 1958 he studied at the Royal College of Music – composition with Peter Racine Fricker, piano with Lamar Crowson and conducting with Sir Adrian Boult – graduating with a BMus degree. ''Atom Heart Mother'' is the fifth studio album by the English progressive rock band Pink Floyd. It was released by Harvest on 2 October 1970 in the UK, and by Capitol on 10 October 1970 in the US. It was recorded at EMI Studios (now Abbey Road Studios) in London, England, and was the band's first album to reach number 1 in the UK, while it reached number 55 in the US, eventually going gold there. The cover was designed by Hipgnosis, and was the first one not to feature the band's name on the cover, or contain any photographs of the band anywhere. This was a trend that would continue on subsequent covers throughout the 1970s and beyond. James Gourlay
James Gourlay (born 1956) is a Scottish conductor and tubist. Biography Gourlay was born in Scotland and began to play in his local brass band at an early age. He took part in numerous solo competitions at that time and soon became Scottish Champion at junior and open levels. After studying at the Royal College of Music Gourlay became principal tuba of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra where he remained for four years. There followed posts in the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Orchester der Oper in Zürich where he worked with most of the world's top conductors. In 2010 he became the Musical Director of the River City Brass Band located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. As a soloist and chamber musician, James Gourlay has won international acclaim. John Fletcher (tubist)
John Fletcher (1941 – October 1987) was an English French Horn and tuba player. He was born and educated in Leeds, and was a pupil at Leeds Modern School, a grammar school, where his father was the music teacher. Along with composer Derek Bourgeois he played tuba in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. Both arrived at Cambridge where there was only one tuba position. Fletcher switched to horn, even performing Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings. He returned to the tuba upon his graduation from studying Natural Sciences at Pembroke College, Cambridge. In autumn 1964, he moved to London, where he was appointed Principal Tuba of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He left the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1966 to join the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO). Lindsay Shilling
Lindsay Shilling (born 4 August 1959) is Principal Trombone at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden alongside Eric Crees. Prior to his appointment in 2005 he was Principal Trombone at the London Philharmonic Orchestra for seven years and Sub-Principal Trombone of the London Symphony Orchestra for the 1994/5 season. He is also Principal Trombone for London Brass. Shilling is Professor of Trombone at the Royal College of Music. In 2004, he was producer for the debut CD of young 10-piece brass ensemble "Brass 10". As a soloist, Shilling has performed the Derek Bourgeois Sonata from Trombone and Brass Band at the 2003 All England Master Gala Concert. Michael Hext
Michael Hext (born c.1961) is a trombonist in the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. In 1978 he was the inaugural winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition. Career Michael Hext was educated at Bedford Modern School. In 1978, at the age of 17, he became the inaugural winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year Competition. Following study at the Royal College of Music with John Iveson, Hext has become a successful orchestral trombonist but performs on occasions as a soloist, including a tour with the European Union Youth Orchestra conducted by Claudio Abbado. He has performed recitals and concertos at the Wigmore Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and many other concert halls. Denis Wick
Denis Wick (born 1931) is an influential British orchestral trombonist. He is also an internationally respected brass teacher and designer of brass mutes and mouthpieces. On retirement in 1989 he was awarded the International Trombone Association's annual award; he served as their president 2004–2006. Wick was born in Braintree, Essex and attended King Edward VI Grammar School, Chelmsford, and Luton Grammar School. He taught himself the trombone from the age of 10 when he received an instrument from the Chelmsford Salvation Army band. He played with the band until the age of 15 and soon joined Luton Brass Band which was enjoying considerable national success at the time. Peter Bassano is an English conductor. Family His descent from Anthony Bassano the oldest brother of a family of six Venetian musicians brought to England by King Henry VIII is registered at the College of Arms. Three generations of the Bassano family dominated instrumental music at the English Court from 1540 until the death of Charles I. In 1973 the historian A. L. Rowse nominated the poet Emilia Bassano, daughter of Baptist Bassano, as his candidate for the Dark Musical Lady of the Shakespeare Sonnets.
