Philanthropies
Philanthropies, formerly LDS Philanthropies, is a department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and is responsible for facilitating donations to humanitarian and educational initiatives. The department works under the direction of the church's Presiding Bishop. The most widely known educational projects are the operation of church-owned schools, such as Brigham Young University (BYU). Humanitarian funds are given to Latter-day Saint Charities which sponsors and organizes relief efforts. In 2019, the church reported over 3,000 community-based projects with an excess of 2,000 partners, in locations around the world. A 2020 statistic reported a total of $2.3 billion that had been donated over Philanthropies' existence. LDS Humanitarian Services
Latter-day Saint Charities (formerly known as "LDS Humanitarian Services") is a branch of the welfare department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The organization's stated mission is to relieve suffering, to foster self-reliance for people of all nationalities and religions, and to provide opportunities for service. Overview The LDS Church considers humanitarian work to be an essential part of its mission to bless humanity. In 1842, Joseph Smith, founder of the Latter Day Saint movement, organized the Women's Relief Society, with a primary focus to provide "relief" to suffering members and ultimately to all people. Perpetual Education Fund
The Perpetual Education Fund (PEF) is a program of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), first announced by church president Gordon B. Hinckley on March 31, 2001. The mission of the PEF, as stated in that address, is to provide educational opportunity ot welfare supportto members living in areas with widespread poverty, enabling and empowering them to lift themselves and establish their future lives on the foundation of self-reliance that can come from training in marketable skills. Mormon Helping Hands
Mormon Helping Hands (or, more recently, simply Helping Hands) is a name under which members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) perform volunteer community service. The name and its logo are worn on t-shirts and vests worn by LDS Church members while providing the service. The shirts and vests are bright yellow or white. The logos were used in 1992 in South Florida after Hurricane Andrew ravaged the city of Homestead and other parts of Miami-Dade County, Florida. The Church officially established the program in 1998 in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Chile to identify service being done by members of the LDS Church. LDS Business College
Ensign College (formerly LDS Business College) is a private college in Salt Lake City, Utah. The college is owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and operates under its Church Educational System. It also includes an Institute of Religion and is accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. History The ''Salt Lake Stake Academy'' was founded in 1886, with high school, normal, business and college courses of study. The school had 84 students upon its opening. By 1895 was offering a four-year course of study culminating in a Ph.B. degree. LDS University never became a fully functioning university and was displaced as the church's preeminent higher learning center by Brigham Young University in the early 20th century. Sharon Eubank
Sharon Eubank (born October 4, 1963) was the first counselor in the Relief Society General Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) from April 2017 to August 2022. She is also the director of Latter-day Saint Charities. Early life and education Eubank was born in Redding, California, to Mark Eubank and Jean Tollack Eubank, but was primarily raised in Bountiful, Utah. The oldest of seven children, Eubank grew up picking apricots and repairing sprinklers on the family's 10-acre plot of land. Eubank's father worked as a meteorologist for KSL and taught his children about weather. Eubank earned a bachelor's degree in English and History from Brigham Young University (BYU). She served as a missionary for the LDS Church in Helsinki, Finland, from 1984 to 1986. Eubank struggled to learn Finnish, widely regarded as one of the most difficult languages to learn. Brigham Young University (BYU, sometimes referred to colloquially as The Y) is a private research university in Provo, Utah.
