Philadelphia Parks And Recreation
Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR) is the municipal department responsible for managing parks, recreation centers, playgrounds, trails, community gardens, and historic properties in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its inventory includes more than 150 parks and 170 recreation centers and playgrounds. It became the successor to the Fairmount Park Commission and the City of Philadelphia Department of Recreation in 2010. General overview In addition to overseeing nearly 10,200 acres of land and hundreds of recreation centers, some of the amenities found in the parks and recreation system include 71 outdoor pools, 223 miles of trails, 404 baseball/softball fields, 40 historic sites, 25 public access computing centers, 460 basketball courts and 66 gardens, farms and orchards. Glen Foerd is a historic mansion and estate located in the Torresdale neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, overlooking the Delaware River near the mouth of Poquessing Creek. History The mansion, then named Glengarry, was built as a summer home about 1850 in the Italianate style by Charles Macalester, Jr., a prosperous businessman and banker. Franklin Square (Philadelphia)
Franklin Square is one of the five original open-space parks planned by William Penn when he laid out the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1682. It is located in the Center City area, between North 6th and 7th Streets, and between Race Street and the Vine Street Expressway (I-676). Penn included this piece of green space in his original city plan as one of five squares, although the park was slow to develop because it was a marshy land. Originally, the park was a place for settlers to meditate and set a virtuous behavior to set a proper example. The park was supposed to be landscaped to have settlers understand the value of nature. In the 1920s, the park was abandoned and the surrounding area became known locally as the tenderloin with an entertainment district featuring taverns and bordellos, and became a place for individuals experiencing homelessness to sleep on the park's benches, resulting in its reputation as Philadelphia's skid row. Fox Chase Farm
Fox Chase Farm is one of two working farms in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ( W.B. Saul High School's Farm in Roxborough is the other).
