Phil Nicol
Philip Nicol (born 1953, Caerphilly, Wales) is a Welsh painter. Nicol graduated from Cardiff College of Art. He has been a lecturer at the Cardiff School and at Limerick Art College, Éire. His paintings often portray twilight inner city landscapes. He was winner of the Gold Medal for Fine Art at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 2001. Nicol was a member of the 56 Group Wales from 1984 to 1991. He is exhibition director at the BayArt gallery, Cardiff Bay. Caerphilly
Caerphilly (, ; cy, Caerffili, ) is a town and community in Wales. It is situated at the southern end of the Rhymney Valley. It is north of Cardiff and northwest of Newport. It is the largest town in Caerphilly County Borough, and lies within the historic borders of Glamorgan, on the border with Monmouthshire. At the 2011 Census, the town had a population of 41,402 while the wider Caerphilly Local Authority area has a population of 178,806. Toponym The name of the town in Welsh, , means "the fort () of Ffili". Despite lack of evidence, tradition states that a monastery was built by St Cenydd, a sixth-century Christian hermit from the Gower Peninsula, in the area. The Welsh cantref in the medieval period was known as Senghenydd. It is said that St Cenydd's son, St Ffili, built a fort in the area thus giving the town its name. Art UK is a cultural, education charity in the United Kingdom, previously known as the Public Catalogue Foundation. Since 2003, it has digitised more than 220,000 paintings by more than 40,000 artists and is now expanding the digital collection to include UK public sculpture.
