Phil Miller
Philip Paul Miller (22 January 1949 – 18 October 2017) was an English progressive rock/jazz guitarist and a central part of the Canterbury scene. He was born in Barnet, Hertfordshire. Self-taught on guitar, Miller formed his first band, Delivery, at age 17, which backed blues musicians playing at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in London. In the 1970s he was a founding member of Matching Mole, Hatfield and the North and National Health. In later years he was a member of Short Wave (with Hugh Hopper, Pip Pyle, and Didier Malherbe), and In Cahoots with Richard Sinclair, Elton Dean, Peter Lemer Peter Naphtali Lemer (born 14 June 1942) is an English jazz musician. Vortex Jazz Club
The Vortex Jazz Club is a music venue in London, England. It was founded by David Mossman in the 1988. Background The Vortex started as a jazz club in 1988 and was located in Stoke Newington Church Street, north London. But after the acquisition of that building by property developers, the club was moved in 2005 to the Dalston Culture House in Gillett Street, N16, in Gilett Square. The Square opened on 10 November 2006 with a performance by Andy Sheppard's Saxophone Massive, a band of 200 saxophonists. The street in front of the club was renamed "Aim Bailey Place" in December 2007 in honor of guitarist Derek Bailey. Musicians who have played at the Vortex include Bailey, Django Bates, Tim Berne, Liane Carroll, John Etheridge, F-IRE Collective, Last Amendment, Evan Parker, Ian Shaw, and Kenny Wheeler. Pip Pyle
Phillip "Pip" Pyle (4 April 1950 – 28 August 2006) was an English-born drummer from Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, who later resided in France. Hatfield And The North (album)
''Hatfield and the North'' is the first album by the English Canterbury scene rock band Hatfield and the North, released in February 1974. In the Q & Mojo Classic Special Edition ''Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock'', the album came #34 in its list of "40 Cosmic Rock Albums". Album cover The cover of the original vinyl release was designed by Laurie Lewis. The front and back outer cover is a panoramic photograph of Reykjavík, with the sky on the right merged with a transparency of a 15th-16th century fresco in Orvieto Cathedral by Luca Signorelli, "The Damned". The inside gatefold is a collage that includes photographs of the personnel and guests involved in the music, the cast of the TV show Bonanza, together with a cropped photograph by Jacques Henri Lartigue of a man throwing a dog. Lol Coxhill
George Lowen Coxhill (19 September 1932 – 10 July 2012) known professionally as Lol Coxhill, was an English free improvising saxophonist. He played soprano and sopranino saxophone. Biography Coxhill was born to George Compton Coxhill and Mabel Margaret Coxhill (née Motton) at Portsmouth, Hampshire, UK. He grew up in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, and bought his first saxophone in 1947. After national service he became a busy semi-professional musician, touring US airbases with Denzil Bailey's Afro-Cubists and the Graham Fleming Combo. In the 1960s he played with visiting American blues, soul and jazz musicians including Rufus Thomas, Mose Allison, Otis Spann, and Champion Jack Dupree. He also developed his practice of playing unaccompanied solo saxophone, often busking in informal performance situations. Little Red Record
''Matching Mole's Little Red Record'' (1972) is the second album of the English Canterbury Scene band Matching Mole. The band was formed in 1971 by Robert Wyatt after he left Soft Machine. Compared to their first album which featured Wyatt's musical compositions, keyboard playing, drumming and vocals, ''Little Red Record'' was more of a team effort, with Wyatt only drumming, and singing his lyrics. It was produced by Robert Fripp of King Crimson, and features Brian Eno as a guest musician. The album title refers to Chairman Mao's ''Little Red Book'' (1964). This reference is also carried over to the faux-Chinese style of the album cover, which is reminiscent of posters created during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. ''Waterloo Lily'' is the fourth album by Caravan, released in 1972 on the Deram label. Background The album cover is detail from "The Tavern Scene" from A Rake's Progress by William Hogarth. The track "The Love in Your Eye" has been featured as a Caravan live track for many years. Recording ''Waterloo Lily'' is the only album by Caravan with Steve Miller (brother of Phil Miller) as the keyboard player. Miller brought a jazz-focused sound to the album than had been heard on the previous album through his stylings on the Wurlitzer piano rather than the Hammond organ favored by previous keyboardist Dave Sinclair. Caravan (band)
Caravan are an English rock band from the Canterbury area, founded by former Wilde Flowers members David Sinclair, Richard Sinclair, Pye Hastings, and Richard Coughlan in 1968. The band have never achieved the great commercial success that was widely predicted for them at the beginning of their career, but are nevertheless considered a key part of the Canterbury scene of progressive rock acts, blending psychedelic rock, jazz, and classical influences to create a distinctive sound. The band were originally based in Whitstable, Kent, near Canterbury, but moved to London when briefly signed to Verve Records. After being dropped by Verve, the band signed to Decca Records, where they released their most critically acclaimed album, '' In the Land of Grey and Pink'', in 1971. Carol Grimes
Carol Ann Grimes (born 7 April 1944) is a British singer and songwriter. In 1969, she joined the band Delivery and recorded one album before departing for a solo career. Her debut solo album, ''Warm Blood'' (1974), was recorded with members of Area Code 615 and the Average White Band. She recorded her second album in Memphis, Tennessee, with the Brecker Brothers, Donald "Duck" Dunn, and The Memphis Horns. She founded the band Eyes Wide Open in 1984. Her career expanded into teaching and working in musical theatre. In the 1990s, she worked with the choir The Shout. Peter Naphtali Lemer (born 14 June 1942) is an English jazz musician. He worked with the Pete Lemer Quintet, Spontaneous Music Ensemble, Annette Peacock, Harry Beckett, Gilgamesh, Baker Gurvitz Army, Seventh Wave, Harry Beckett's Joy Unlimited, Pierre Moerlen's Gong, Mike Oldfield Group, In Cahoots, and Miller/Baker/Lemer. He currently works with In Cahoots, Peter Lemer Trio/Quartet, Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia, and the Peter Lemer-Billy Thompson Quartet and Duo. Early life and education Peter Lemer was born in London, England. He studied piano and composition at the Royal Academy of Music with Sven Weber and John Gardner, privately with Thomas Rajna, and then at workshops in London run by Jack Goldzweig (who had himself co-coached in New York with Mal Waldron and John Mehegan).
