Phil Hilton
Phil Hilton is a Canadian retired ice hockey defenseman who was the Most Outstanding Player for the 1955 NCAA tournament. Career Hilton ended his junior career with his home town Brandon Wheat Kings in 1952 and immediately jumped into the college hockey ranks. He appeared as a freshman for Colorado College (a rarity at the time) and tried to build on CC's runner-up finish the year before. Unfortunately the Tigers halved the win total and finished towards the bottom of the conference standings. The team started to recover in Hilton's second season, a year that saw him being named to the All-WIHL Second Team. In his final year with the team, Hilton helped Colorado College finish atop the league standings and earn the top seed in the NCAA tournament. List Of NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey All-Tournament Teams
NCAA All-Tournament team is an honor bestowed at the conclusion of the NCAA Division I ice hockey tournament to the players judged to have performed the best during the championship. The team is currently composed of three forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender with additional players named in the event of a tie. Voting for the honor was conducted by the head coaches of each member team once the tournament has completed and any player regardless of their team's finish is eligible. The All-Tournament Team began being awarded after the first championship in 1948 along with an All-Tournament Second-Team. The second team was dropped after the 1969 tournament and it has remained a single team ever since except for 1976 when no team was selected. In recent years the regional tournaments have begun to name all-tournament teams of their own, making the NCAA All-Tournament team draw only from the teams and performances in the Frozen Four. Lorne Howes
Lorne Howes is a Canadian retired ice hockey goaltender who won back-to-back National Championships for Michigan in the 1950s. Career After finishing his junior career with the Barrie Flyers, which included winning the 1951 Memorial Cup, Howes received interest from the Boston Bruins but he decided to play college hockey instead. Howest began attending Michigan in 1952 while the program was at its pinnacle under Vic Heyliger. Howes did not play in his first year of varsity eligibility due to being the third goaltender behind Willard Ikola and Bill Lucier but, once the All-American Ikola graduated in 1954, Howes was able to take control of the net. Howes backstopped Michigan to a second-place finish in the WIHL in 1954–55, earning AHCA Second Team All-American honors as well as a spot in the NCAA tournament. The 1955 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the culmination of the 1954–55 NCAA men's ice hockey season, the 8th such tournament in NCAA history. It was held between March 10 and 12, 1955, and concluded with Michigan defeating Colorado College 5–3. All games were played at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Qualifying teams Four teams qualified for the tournament, two each from the eastern and western regions. The two best WIHL teams and a Tri-State League representative received bids into the tournament as did one independent school. Format The eastern team judged as better was seeded as the top eastern team while the WIHL champion was given the top western seed. Abbie Moore
Albert W. "Abbie" Moore is a Canadian retired ice hockey center who was the MOP for the 1954 NCAA Tournament. Career Abbie Moore was in the second recruit class for Ned Harkness after Rensselaer brought back its ice hockey program in 1949. After sitting out his freshman season (a common practice as the NCAA restricted students to just three years of varsity play) Moore exploded onto the scene in 1951. Teamed with Frank Chiarelli and Ambrose Mosco, Moore centered one of the most potent scoring lines in college hockey. In just 18 games Moore scored 31 goals and 34 assists, and finished third in the nation in scoring. RPI tripled its win total from the year before and narrowly missed out on its first NCAA Tournament appearance.
