Phil Gude
Phillip Archibald Gude (born 2 June 1941) is a former Victorian politician. From 1991 to 1999 he was deputy leader of the Victorian Liberal Party. Business career Gude was born in Geelong to Archibald Gilby, small business owner, and Mavis Murfett. His education was at Geelong High School and the Gordon Institute of TAFE. His business career commenced in 1960 with the Shell Oil Company as a trainee 1960–53, and proceeded to Blakistons Ltd as an accountant 1963–64, and the Ford Motor Company as an industrial relations officer 1964–67. He was executive director of the Bread Manufactures Association Victoria, the Master Pastrycooks Association Victoria and the Geelong Chamber of Commerce 1974–1976. Politics Gude was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as Member for Geelong East in March 1976. He was defeated at the next election in March 1979. 1985 Victorian State Election
The 1985 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 2 March 1985, was for the 50th Parliament of Victoria. It was held in the Australian state of Victoria to elect all 88 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 22 members of the 44-member Legislative Council. Since the previous election, the number of members of the Legislative Assembly was increased by 7 to 88. Lindsay Thompson, who led the Liberal Party to a defeat at the 1982 election with a 17-seat swing against it, resigned the leadership of the party on 5 November 1982. He was succeeded by Jeff Kennett. At the election, the incumbent Labor Party government led by John Cain Jr. maintained its electoral support, though the Liberal Party did increase the number of seats. 1999 Victorian State Election
The 1999 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 18 September 1999, was for the 54th Parliament of Victoria. It was held in the Australian state of Victoria to elect the 88 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 22 members of the 44-member Legislative Council. The Liberal–National Coalition led by Jeff Kennett and Pat McNamara, which had held majority government since the 1996 election, lost 15 seats and its majority due mainly to a swing against it in rural and regional Victoria. The Labor Party, led by Steve Bracks, although also not having majority of the seats, took government due to support from three rural independents. They decided to back the Labor Party, which gave a working majority in the chamber to a Labor minority government. Bracks was sworn in as Premier of Victoria on 20 October 1999. AWU Affair
The AWU affair refers to allegations of embezzlement via a fund established for the AWU Workplace Reform Association in the early 1990s by Bruce Wilson and Ralph Blewitt, officials of the Australian Workers' Union (AWU). Wilson and Blewitt raised $400,000 from major construction companies, and have been accused of using the funds for personal benefit, including diverting funds for the purchase of a house in Fitzroy. Julia Gillard, who subsequently became Prime Minister of Australia, was a salaried partner at law firm Slater & Gordon who provided pro-bono legal services to Wilson, with whom she was romantically involved, for the establishment of the Association and for the purchase of the Fitzroy property. Jeffrey Gibb Kennett (born 2 March 1948) is a former Australian politician who was the 43rd Premier of Victoria between 1992 and 1999, and currently a media commentator. He was previously the president of the Hawthorn Football Club, serving from 2005 to 2011 and again from 2017 to 2022. The electoral district of Hawthorn is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It was first proclaimed in 1888 taking effect at the 1889 elections. The seat is located in eastern Melbourne and is centred on the suburbs of Hawthorn and Hawthorn East. It also includes Camberwell and parts of Canterbury, Glen Iris, and Surrey Hills. It has usually been a safe seat for the Liberal Party and its predecessors, having been held by a number of leaders and senior ministers.
