Phi Gamma Delta House
Phi Gamma Delta House is an historic fraternity house at 79 College Avenue, near the campus of the University of Maine in Orono. It is the only Tudor Revival fraternity house on that campus, and was built to provide increased housing to the school's male student population. The architects were Crowell & Lancaster. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2013. Description and history The Phi Gamma Delta House is located on the west side of College Avenue, at the southwestern edge of the University of Maine campus, and just east of the Stillwater River. It is the southernmost of a series of fraternity and sorority houses that line College Avenue. It is a large 2-1/2 story brick Tudor Revival structurem with a side-gable slate roof and an asymmetrical projecting front-gable entry section. Orono, Maine
Orono () is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. Located on the Penobscot and Stillwater rivers, it was first settled by American colonists in 1774. They named it in honor of Chief Joseph Orono, a sachem of the indigenous Penobscot nation who long occupied this territory. In the nineteenth century, the town became a center of the lumber industry. Sawmills on the rivers were powered by the water, and logs were floated downriver on the Penobscot for shipping and export from coastal ports. Since 1865 it has been the location of the University of Maine, established as a land-grant institution and the state's flagship educational institution. In the fall of 2018, the university enrolled 11,404 students at Orono. Not including university residents, the town's population was 11,183 at the 2020 census. C. Parker Crowell (1876–1959) was an American architect in practice in Bangor, Maine, from 1902 until his retirement in 1956. Phi Gamma Delta (), commonly known as Fiji, is a social fraternity with more than 144 active chapters and 10 colonies across the United States and Canada. It was founded at Jefferson College, Pennsylvania, in 1848. Along with Phi Kappa Psi, Phi Gamma Delta forms a half of the Jefferson Duo. Since its founding in 1848, the fraternity has initiated more than 196,000 brothers. The nickname FIJI is used commonly by the fraternity due to Phi Gamma Delta bylaws that limit the use of the Greek letters. History The first fraternity house seems to have been located at Alpha Epsilon of Chi Psi at the University of Michigan around 1846.
