Pheidole Sinaitica
''Pheidole'' is a genus of ants that belongs to the ant subfamily Myrmicinae. The genus is widespread and ecologically dominant. It probably includes more than 1000 species. The genus first evolved in the Americas, eventually spreading across the globe. Colony structure Most species of ''Pheidole'' are dimorphic, which means that colonies contain two castes of workers, the "minor" workers, and the "major" workers, or "soldiers". The latter generally have much larger heads and mandibles in comparison to their usually fairly modest body size. In addition, as in other ant species, a colony may contain one or several queens, and also in mature colonies, alates - virgin winged females and males. Pheidole_xerophila-major_minors.jpg, major and minor workers of ''P. xerophila'' Major workers The distinctive major workers have earned the genus ''Pheidole'' the nickname of "big-headed ants". John Obadiah Westwood
John Obadiah Westwood (22 December 1805 – 2 January 1893) was an English entomologist and archaeologist also noted for his artistic talents. He published several illustrated works on insects and antiquities. He was among the first entomologists with an academic position at Oxford University. He was a natural theologian, staunchly anti-Darwinian, and sometimes adopted a quinarian viewpoint. Although he never travelled widely, he described species from around the world on the basis of specimens, especially of the larger, curious, and colourful species, obtained by naturalists and collectors in England. Life and work Westwood was born in a Quaker family in Sheffield, the son of medal and die maker, John Westwood (1774–1850) and Mary, daughter of Edward Betts. He went to school at the Friends' School, Sheffield and later at Lichfield when the family moved there. He apprenticed briefly to become a solicitor and worked briefly as a partner in a firm but gave up a career in law f ... Pheidole Dodo
''Pheidole dodo'' is a species of ant in the subfamily Myrmicinae. It is named after the dodo, an extinct bird of Mauritius. Habitat and distribution ''Pheidole dodo'' is known from Mauritius only, where it was collected from the ground, inside rotten logs, under moss or from the leaf litter and in coastal scrub, closed vegetation, low closed forest, disturbed and undisturbed rainforest, in elevations between 1 and 760 m. Description The minors are most similar to those of '' P. braueri'', differing from the latter by slightly smaller eyes and decumbent to subdecumbent versus mostly suberect scape pilosity in ''P. braueri''. The majors look like an odd hybrid of those of ''P. braueri'', '' P. jonas'', and '' P. decepticon'', with the head in full-face view somewhat resembling that of ''P. decepticon'', the mesosoma in profile similar to ''P. jonas'' and the postpetiole shape closest to ''P. braueri''. This combination, however, makes this species unique and easily identifiable ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Pheidole Dentata
''Pheidole dentata'' is a species of ant in the subfamily Myrmicinae. It is distributed in North America, from the Mid-Atlantic states and southeastern United States to Mexico. Neurochemistry ''P. dentata'' takes on more and more tasks in the colony as it gets older, which requires it to respond to more and more olfactory cues in the course of performing them. This broadening olfactory response repertoire was demonstrated by Seid and Traniello 2006 to go along with increased serotonin and dopamine, but not octopamine Octopamine (molecular formula C8H11NO2; also known as OA, and also norsynephrine, ''para''-octopamine and others) is an organic chemical closely related to norepinephrine, and synthesized biologically by a homologous pathway.
