Phaedra Cinema was a United States distributor of independent and international films. The company was created by filmmaker Gregory Hatanaka in 1996 and its first release was the comedy ''Sudden Manhattan'', directed by and starring Adrienne Shelley. Phaedra Cinema's most notable releases included ''Fever Pitch'' starring Colin Firth, '' La Separation'' starring Isabelle Huppert, a restored edition of Jimmy Wang Yu's 1975 ''Master of the Flying Guillotine'', and two Nikkatsu ''Roman porno'' films, Masaru Konuma's '' Wife to be Sacrificed'' ( 1974) and Noboru Tanaka's '' A Woman Called Sada Abe'' (1975 It was also declared the ''International Women's Year'' by the United Nations and the European Architectural Heritage Year by the Council of Europe. Gregory Hatanaka
Gregory Hatanaka is an American independent filmmaker and film distributor based in Los Angeles, California. Career Hatanaka is the founder of film distribution and production company Cinema Epoch and Cineridge Entertainment. He first became involved in film distribution working for Headliner Productions on the re-release of films by director Edward D. Wood, Jr. He founded Phaedra Cinema to distribute international films in the U.S. With a specialization in cult films, Phaedra released such films as Toshimichi Ohkawa's ''Nobody'' (1994), Cha Chuen Lee's '' Once Upon a Time in Triad Society'' (1996), and Jimmy Wang Yu's ''Master of the Flying Guillotine'' (1975) and Toshiharu Ikeda's ''Evil Dead Trap'' (1988). Hatanaka has explained the origins of his interest in Asian cult cinema: "I grew up going to the drive-ins, watching Sonny Chiba movies-- I've always had a passion for that." It is based on the true story of a woman who strangled her lover during a love-making session, then severed his penis, which she carried with her until her arrest.Weisser, p.359. The story became a national sensation in Japan in 1936, developing mythic overtones, and has since been interpreted by artists, philosophers, novelists and filmmakers. Plot Over a black screen, Sada Abe (Junko Miyashita) tells some of the aliases she had used in her past. The opening concludes when the words "Kichi Sada 2" appear on the screen, followed by a newspaper headline, "Document: Sada Abe", which is the Japanese title of the film. Noboru Tanaka
was a Japanese film director known for his ''Roman Porno'' films, including three critically respected films known as the ''Showa trilogy'': '' A Woman Called Sada Abe'' (''aka'' ''Sada Abe: Docu-Drama'') (1975), ''Watcher in the Attic'' (1976), and '' Beauty's Exotic Dance: Torture!'' (1977), all three starring Nikkatsu ''Roman porno'' queen Junko Miyashita. is a Japanese film director known for his ''Roman Porno'' films for Nikkatsu during the 1970s. Life and career Early life Masaru Konuma was born in Otaru, Hokkaidō, on December 30, 1937. Konuma retains no memories of his father who was a teacher. Drafted into the army after the outbreak of World War II in 1941, Konuma's father became ill with tuberculosis within a year of the start his military service, and returned home where he died. After the war, Konuma's mother remarried, and Konuma, then 15, was sent away to live in Tokyo. Konuma recalls, "In those days, there was no TV. I had no idea about Tokyo. is a Japanese entertainment company known for its film and television productions. It is Japan's oldest major movie studio, founded in 1912 during the silent film era. The name ''Nikkatsu'' amalgamates the words Nippon Katsudō Shashin, literally "Japan Motion Pictures". Shareholders are Nippon Television Holdings (35%) and SKY Perfect JSAT Corporation (28.4%). Adrienne Levine (June 24, 1966 – November 1, 2006), better known by the stage name Adrienne Shelly (sometimes credited as Adrienne Shelley), was an American actress, film director and screenwriter. She became known for roles in independent films such as Hal Hartley's '' The Unbelievable Truth'' (1989) and ''Trust'' (1990). She wrote, co-starred in, and directed the 2007 posthumously-released film ''Waitress'' which later became a Broadway show. Shelly's death in 2006 was initially determined by police to be suicide; her husband's insistence on a re-evaluation brought her killer to justice. ''Master of the Flying Guillotine'' is a 1976 Hong Kong ''wuxia'' film starring Jimmy Wang Yu, who also wrote and directed the film. It is a sequel to Wang's 1971 film ''One-Armed Boxer'', and thus the film is also known as ''One-Armed Boxer 2'' and ''The One-Armed Boxer vs. the Flying Guillotine''. Plot The film concerns Wang's one-armed martial arts master being stalked by an imperial assassin, the master of two fighters (the Tibetan lamas) who were killed in the previous film.
