The pound or pound-mass is a unit of mass used in British imperial and United States customary systems of measurement. Various definitions have been used; the most common today is the international avoirdupois pound, which is legally defined as exactly , and which is divided into 16 avoirdupois ounces. The international standard symbol for the avoirdupois pound is lb; an alternative symbol is lbm (for most pound definitions), # ( chiefly in the U.S.), and or ″̶ (specifically for the apothecaries' pound). August Herman Pfund
August Herman Pfund (December 28, 1879 – January 4, 1949) was an American physicist, spectroscopist, and inventor. Early life Pfund was born in Madison, Wisconsin and attended Wisconsin public schools until his entry into the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he earned a B.S. degree in physics and studied under Robert W. Wood. Career Both Wood and Pfund left Wisconsin for Johns Hopkins University in 1903. From 1903 to 1905 Pfund was a Carnegie research assistant and continued to work under Wood. In 1906 Pfund earned his Ph.D. in physics and was a Johnston scholar from 1907 to 1909. He remained at Hopkins for the remainder of his career, eventually becoming a full professor and later chair of the physics department. From 1943 to 1944 Pfund served as the president of the Optical Society of America. Guillermo Nicolás Pfund (born 30 May 1989) is an Argentine professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Club Olimpo. Career Pfund began in the youth of Unión de Tornquist, Boca Juniors and Vélez Sarsfield. In 2010, Deportivo Merlo of Primera B Nacional loaned Pfund. He was sent off on both his debut versus San Martín in February and his final appearance versus Boca Unidos in May. June 2011 saw Pfund join Peru's Cienciano on loan, though he'd return to Vélez Sarsfield months later to subsequently be loaned out to Swiss Challenge League side Bellinzona. Jessica Pfund (born January 9, 1998) is a retired Swiss-American pair skater who represents Switzerland. With skating partner Joshua Santillan, she is the 2015 Autumn Classic International bronze medalist and has competed at two Grand Prix events. They are the 2022 Swiss national champions. Career Early career Pfund began learning to skate in 2003. As a single skater, she won the juvenile bronze medal at the 2009 U.S. Junior Championships and placed 12th on the novice level at the 2011 U.S. Championships. In the 2011–12 season, Pfund began competing in pair skating with AJ Reiss. In 2012, they appeared at two Junior Grand Prix events, placing 5th in Lake Placid, New York and 7th in Chemnitz, Germany. Le Roy Herbert Pfund (October 18, 1919 – June 2, 2016) was a Major League Baseball pitcher. Early life Pfund was born in Oak Park, Illinois. Baseball career On November 1, 1944 he was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers from the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1944 rule 5 draft, and played for the Dodgers in 1945. The 25-year-old rookie right-hander stood and weighed . Pfund was one of many ballplayers who only appeared in the major leagues during World War II. He made his major league debut in relief against the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds on April 21, 1945, when professional baseball teams conducted spring training in the north.
