Petrović ( sr-Cyrl, Петровић, ;) is a South Slavic language patronymic surname literally meaning ''Peter's son'', equivalent to the English last name of Peterson. In Eastern Slavic naming customs its counterpart is "Petrovich". The surname Petrović is particularly tied to Serbian nationality; the majority of Petrovićs come from Serbia (83% of them) and the Serbian Royal Family's original surname is "Petrović", originating from Karađorđe Petrović. Petrović is the second most frequent surname in Serbia, it is also ranked in the first 10 in Montenegro and is also the 11th most common in Croatia, with 9,614 carriers (2011 census). Aleksandar Petrović ( sr-Cyrl, Александар Петровић; born February 8, 1985) is a Serbian former Association football, footballer. Career Born in Belgrade, Petrović began his career in his native country, Serbia when he played for FK BASK. He played three seasons with BASK. During the 2006/07 season, he moved to FK Mladost Lučani and later on played two seasons with Mladost Lučani. He later on moved to FK Rad in the Serbian SuperLiga. During the 2010/11 season, he moved to FK Sloboda Point Sevojno. For the 2011 season, he played with Serbian club, FK Novi Pazar in the Serbian SuperLiga. Early in 2012 Petrović joined FK Radnički Niš in Serbian First League. After a year at Radnički Niš, he moved to the champions of the 2011 AFC Cup, FC Nasaf. Đorđe Petrović ( sr-Cyrl, Ђорђе Петровић, ), better known by the sobriquet Karađorđe ( sr-Cyrl, Карађорђе, lit=Black George, ;  – ), was a Serbian revolutionary who led the struggle for his country's independence from the Ottoman Empire during the First Serbian Uprising of 1804–1813. Born into an impoverished family in the Šumadija region of Ottoman Serbia, Karađorđe distinguished himself during the Austro-Turkish War of 1788–1791 as a member of the Serbian Free Corps, a militia of Habsburg and Ottoman Serbs, armed and trained by the Austrians. Fearing retribution following the Austrians' and Serb rebels' defeat in 1791, he and his family fled to the Austrian Empire, where they lived until 1794, when a general amnesty was declared. Dražen Petrović (; 22 October 1964 – 7 June 1993) was a Yugoslav and Croatian professional basketball player. A shooting guard, he initially achieved success playing professional basketball in Europe in the 1980s, before joining the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1989. Danilo I Petrović-Njegoš ( sr-cyr, Данило I Петровић-Његош; 25 May 1826 – 13 August 1860) was the ruling Prince of Montenegro from 1851 to 1860. The beginning of his reign marked the transition of Montenegro from an archaic form of government ( Prince-Bishopric) into a secular Principality.
