Petra Hillenius
Petronella Angela "Petra" Hillenius (7 February 1968 in Woerden - 27 March 2020) was a Dutch breaststroke swimmer, who competed at the Swimming at the 1984 Summer Olympics, 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles. She finished 19th in the Swimming at the 1984 Summer Olympics – Women's 100 metre breaststroke, 100 metre breaststroke and 18th in the Swimming at the 1984 Summer Olympics – Women's 100 metre breaststroke, 200 metre breaststroke. In 2014, she became a board member of the Royal Dutch Swimming Federation. She resigned the position when she was diagnosed with ALS four years later. In March 2020 she died due to ALS. She was a teacher for 24 years at the Hospitality Business School of the Saxion University of Applied Sciences. Woerden () is a city and a municipality in central Netherlands. Due to its central location between Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Utrecht, and the fact that it has rail and road connections to those cities, it is a popular town for commuters who work in those cities. History The river Oude Rijn used to flow through the city center of Woerden, but in 1960 the old river was diverted around the city center. The city has a long and rich history in cheese making and trading; for years Gouda cheese for domestic and international use has been produced in this region. Breaststroke
Breaststroke is a swimming style in which the swimmer is on their chest and the torso does not rotate. It is the most popular recreational style due to the swimmer's head being out of the water a large portion of the time, and that it can be swum comfortably at slow speeds. Swimming is an individual or team racing sport that requires the use of one's entire body to move through water. The sport takes place in pools or open water (e.g., in a sea or lake). Competitive swimming is one of the most popular Olympic sports, with varied distance events in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle, and individual medley. The swimming competitions of the 1984 Summer Olympics were held at the McDonald's Olympic Swim Stadium, located on the University of Southern California (USC) campus. There were a total of 494 participants from 67 countries competing. This was the first Olympic Games at which only two swimmers per country, per event, were permitted; previously, three swimmers were allowed and many countries would sweep the medal stand. In addition, the women's 200-metre individual medley returned to the program from a twelve-year absence, following a proposal by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOC). The Royal Dutch Swimming Federation ( nl, Koninklijke Nederlandse Zwem Bond, “KNZB”) is the official governing body for swimming, in the Netherlands. The federation overlooks several other sports including competition swimming, open water swimming, water polo, diving and synchronized swimming. The federation is based in Nieuwegein and affiliated with the national sports body NOC*NSF. The responsibility of the KNZB is to organize and track various events.
